This is quite a timely subject as I have been thinking about this as I'm due for new tyres soon. With only around 5-7mm chain clearance with the current 180/55 tyre mounted, it would be bit late to bring home a nice shiny new Pirelli Angel for example and find it rubs the chain. In that case it would be worth just dropping back to a 170, don't lose that much width.

Ray, a Pirelli Angel 180 wil NOT worry your chain. I've run both the Angel and PR4 180's with no clearance problems. My PR4 has about 5-6mm chain clearance, about the same as the Angel.

I have two PR 4's. One on a 5.5" FZ1 wheel and one on a 5.5" GTS wheel Both measure 6 "15/16ths. The variance between the two is less than 1/16th. Both have been manufactured within the last calendar year.

Pirelli Angel GT, 180-55-17, mounted on 5.5" wheel is a whisker under 7 1/4" wide.

That sounds like the tire I want.  What series?  180? 170?
Thanks

The I'm running pr4 180. Excellent tire. Pr4 180 is slightly narrower than the pr3 180

Mark, the 180 will fit. At 7" wide you will have about 1/4" clearance on the chain. So you run either a 170 or a 180.

Thanks, I want the widest Michelin PR4 tire that I can fit,  so if the 180 is 7" , that's the one I'm going to get.  7-1/4"  appears to be the widest tire that would fit on my set up and would leave me with barely 1/8" clearance.

Thanks !  180 is the one then.  Now I need to ware out this set of Conti's.  Love the RA2's, but no tread in the center of the rear tire makes it hard to tell when it's done... then one day the cords start showing through.

Bones

A 170/60 pr3 fitted to a 4 1/2 inch rim is about 165mm or 6 1/2 inches wide. Plenty of room left.
