An update on my recovery

Hi everyone,

l received a PM from another member asking how my surgery had gone, and it dawned on me that l hadn't given an update on how l was doing. My apologies, l know that people are thinking of me and praying. l guess time has just gotten away from me.

l had surgery last Wednesday. lt was thought that there was a small broken bone, called a "bony bankart", as well as a torn labrum. Unfortunately, when they got in there, they found that my arm was virtually being held together by skin and little else. All off the ligaments and tendons in the shoulder were torn, including the rotator cuff. On a positive note, none of the muscles in the area were damaged.

l spent the first 3 days icing with a cryotherapy machine, pretty much around the clock. l have made great strides in a week; last night l slept through the night without any of my prescription pain relievers. When l woke up l was sore, but have made it through today with only a few Tylenol and 2 of my pain pills. When l first got home l needed the pain meds regularly. l am also allowed to go for walks now, which l did on Sunday, taking Halle (our German Shepherd) on our regular 1 mile loop. Tonight l will take her out again and see if l can stretch that out to 2 miles.

What l am doing currently will continue for 5 more weeks; then l will start physical therapy. l am likely to go back to work in December.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers <3

Keep the progress reports coming. FJ or Hawk, you fit in well with this rag tag group of misfits... Keep posting on your progress. Or at least send me a few PMs. My talks with you were good, meeting you at a rally would be a goal for me.

Glad you are mending, and you are starting to do "Normal" things. That's important in the recovery process.

Time will fly by, and this will all be a story that is told around a campfire, at the next Rally you attend.  :drinks:

Yeah, Mark...You would definitely want to meet Scott.  At a rally...or at a breakfast before a ride...or kibitzing over life and FJ issues in a garage until 2:00 in the morning.  Most days, you run across people who will just come and probably go and you know it almost instantly.  Then you run into a few that you just take a moment to yourself and say, "Damn...he's a good dude..."  Scott's in the latter group.

I've been around bike incidents...car incidents...roll-overs on the trails with people injured to some extent or another and it's always been very mechanical.  Sort it all out and send them on their way with all their contacts informed.  I have to say that seeing Scott on the shoulder of the road...with his shoulder in major disarray...Everyone jumping in to do what needed to be done in exactly the moment it was needed brought the whole incident into a whole different light.  It was the first time I've been emotional about a get-off and I had to remind myself to keep it together.

Bike or no bike, I hope I get to meet up with him again...the rally at Willits would be excellent...swap stories...enjoy a campfire...catch up on life and generally let the weight of the world lift off our shoulders.

Sorry that the damage was worse than previously thought. Good you are on the mend, the pain is under control and your getting a good nights sleep.

I agree with Ron about Scott. Wish we could have spent more time with him. Hope so see him at a future rally.

Scott, like most folks, I hate hearing about further complications when on the mend, but am very glad to hear that you are now truly doing better.  Hopefully, you will encounter no further issues and regain full range of motion in your shoulder so you can get back to work.  Hope to see you back on the FJ at a future rally.   :good2:
