FJ1100 petcock retrofit?

Will this combination work? I already had the fuel pump and filter and a manual petcock is much cheaper then a used Yamaha petcock which is getting more difficult finding  filter diaphragms and filters for. Manual petcock + filter + fuel pump. The specs for the fuel pump are below. The pump itself is slightly smaller then the size of a closed fist.

Solid-state worry free electronics. Eliminates vapor lock and flooding. Works well as a fuel transfer pump and makes a great stand-alone or booster pump
Gravity Fed type pump with simple two-wire design. Works on 12 Volt negative ground systems only. Includes fittings and mounting hardware along with easy to follow DIY instructions. Fuel is contained safely inside a durable metal housing. Pumps require approximately one amp average draw at maximum delivery. Part No. 12S Specs: 4-7 PSI, 35 GPH. Universal design for most domestic 4, 6, & 8 cylinder carburetor applications

The fuel pump would work ok on later model FJs (89-up) The carbs have needle/seats designed for a fuel pump.

Your FJ1100 has different ones designed for a gravity-feed system.

Get with Randy or Robert at RPM. I think you might be able to retrofit your needle/seats to the later "Fuel-pump" style ones.

A manual fuel petcock would work well. You would just have to remember to shut it off when you switch the bike off.  :hi:

Interesting.

Since it is gravity fed, do you have any thoughts where you may mount it? No specifications on its size are provided, and I know its a tight fit, but perhaps if the stock shock with its chain spring preload and rebound damping adjuster is gone, or if there are pods instead of the OEM airbox on the bike, there may be a spot for it. I looked at it online, and it's stated that it's a "micro" pump, so there's hope in that description.

If you search this site on this topic you will find other issues that might be important to you if you add a FP (Fuel Pump) to a GF (Gravity Feed) FJ. The current FP FJ has a system that runs the pump for a few seconds (when first turned on) to make sure the carbs have fuel, then it stops pumping. It resumes pumping when the engine is running. A simple safety system. Then consider the other safety issues when things go wrong. You crash, the ignition is still on, the carbs will not keep the engine running if laying on the side, but fuel keeps pumping. It will drain out and become a raw source of exposed fuel in a puddle or small stream. Just keep thinking of the exposed raw fuel... We have covered this and some good ideas have come from it. Just think it all the way through.... I have some of the parts needed to do this conversion (donated by Movenon George) to my '86 but since it is parked with a cracked case the project is on the back burner.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Firehawk068-
the size of the pump is about 2.25" cubed without the side I/O ports. The reason for thinking of the fuel pump with the manual petcock was, so as not to worry about forgetting to turn  off the petcock.

FJ1100mjk- there is plenty of room to mount the pump as I have the air filter pods and the original shock as been replaced with an Ohlins.

Mark- yes that's a concern (fuel in accident).. maybe a "switch " in conjunction with a relay that supplies the pump?

When I convert gravity feed to pumps I install a "fuel shut off solenoid" wired to the ignition. It only allows fuel to flow when the ignition is on.

If safety in an accident is of concern, you can buy roll over sensors from ATV's, jetski's etc on eBay for $20. They will cut power to the fuel pump, or the whole bike if you want, beyond a certain angle. They are not very big and can be mounted anywhere at all on the bike (just wires, no fuel lines)

Adding a fuel pump also gives you a more reliable fuel supply and the best part, proper filtration.
