Muffler Stay - Reverting back to stock exhaust

Hello! I picked up (rescued) a 1989 FJ1200 last fall which has seen better times. I'm not new to motorcycle rehabs, though this is the newest bike I've ever started on. My first task is to correct many of the common "go fast" modifications made by the previous owners. The task there is substantial, but I'm now at the point where I've decided to pull off the cheap aftermarket 4-into-1 pipes and can, and decided I'd take it back to stock, which has led me to the conclusion that I'm taking it all back to stock.

I tracked down the headers, collector, and cans, and refurbished them. I've found the necessary nuts, bolts, and gaskets, but I'm missing one essential piece of the puzzle which is necessary for it all to mount firmly on the bike - the "muffler stay" mounting bracket to attach the back of the collector to the underside of the engine. Yamaha Part Number: 36Y-14791-00-00. Various sites around North America have stated that they have the part, but when they go to ship, they inform me that the part is no longer available.

It's a very specific piece to the FJ1100/FJ1200 line. Any ideas on where I could go for a source? I assume many people have done similar to the bike's previous owner and simply removed and tossed it when removing the collector. I'd love to nab one before it reaches the garbage! In a pinch, I could likely fabricate a functional replacement, but it would be great to have the intended part for the job.

Thanks!

Paul

Paul,

Where are you located?  I'm almost certain I have a spare of the part you're looking for.
Its too dark and too chilly to go out to the shed and look for it now.  I'll check tomorrow.
Only catch is, I'm in Victoria Australia.

Editor's Note: I'm also reaching out to people parting out bikes here. It's just such a mundane part that it's possible someone might be in the process of throwing one away this very moment while going to a different exhaust. =)

Hiya Arnie

Thanks for your quick reply. I'm in the US, in Wisconsin. I wonder what the shipping would be?  Would be ironic to pay $50 shipping on a part most have thrown away, but nearly at that point. =)  When the weather breaks, let me know and I'll check into it.

Thanks,

Paul

This list is international and that means that not everyone is in the same time zone.
In addition, many don't read the list every day.

Give your plea a couple of days before you panic.   :hi:
Oh yeah, welcome to the list.

I have a couple of boxes of miscellaneous nuts, bolts and parts. I will have a look to see if I have a bracket hiding in one of the boxes.

I have seen a few on eBay. Here is an example of the part you need.

Yes! Your Ebay sleuthing skills are superior to my own, though the UK was good to FJs.

So nice to see what one actually looks like outside of a blown up parts list drawing.

Thanks, Fred!

I am sure I have a spare one here in SoCal if you don't find any closer donors.

Yes. The part number doesn't change for the full run of the FJ1100 and FJ1200. I appreciate your looking. =)

I have looked through my boxes of spare parts. I do not have one.  :unknown:

I appreciate your taking the time to look. It sounds like I might have an option in the midwest US that I can check on in a week or so.

As an aside, I had to try running with just the headers around the block once. I couldn't make it more than a few hundred feet before needing to turn back to hide from the rozzers. My head seemed to literally be inside the motor.

It is rediculously loud that way, isn't it? The last time I repacked my V&H muffler, I just had to start it up with the baffle out. I didn't even consider taking it out on the street. I knew I wasn't going to impress any of my neighbors.

I looked around in my parts couldn't find one. But I know one of my bikes has one still on it. I'll check it out. And take it off. If you still need it. Just the cost of shipping.

That would be amazing. Your offer is the most promising so far, and it looks like you're also in Wisconsin? Sometime the universe comes together. I'll be in touch via PM.
