G'day all
I think my fuel pump has a terminal illness :dash2:.. This is what its doing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bC8LPnSAXLI

Has anybody brought one of these pumps http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FUEL-PUMP-for-YAMAHA-FJ1200-FJ-1200-FJ-1200-1989-1993-/281500363332?hash=item418abaaa44.... Are they any good ?.... or up shit creek without a paddle. Thanks in advance !!!

You know Randy sells a replacement contact points set for the OEM fuel pump.

Or there are a bunch of other low pressure fuel pumps with shut-off valves available.
Here are some of them:

FUEL PUMPs   Part No      Pressure Range   Max. Flow
  Brand      FED-40104    1.5 – 3.5psi   28 gph
  FEDTRO      FED-40105    2.5 – 4.5psi   30 gph
   Sold on Ebay.au by       the_auction_broker  (Philip Island)
* FuelFlo        015        1  -  4psi   23 gph  1.5Lpm
   Repco supplied for A$110.00
Airtex -       ES8016S      2.5-4.5 PSI   30 GPH
5/16" hose barbs   It is a solenoid pump that stops fuel if no power

And, your bike will run with the pump bypassed if you keep the fuel tank more than half full and are gentle with the throttle. (to be used until you can replace your dud pump)

My fuel pump shit itself at last years Mapleton Muster doing the same as in the video, wouldn't build pressure so couldn't pump fuel. Pulled the main line from tank to pump off the pump and hooked it straight to carbs, had no trouble with fuel flow after that even with spirited riding for the rest of the day.

Bought a pump like that from eBay but the barbs that the hoses goes on are 10 mm instead of the original 8 mm, so instead of dicking around trying to get the smaller hose to fit the bigger barbs finding adapters etc.. or changing fuel hose size, I just pulled the pumps apart where the centre tangs are and swapped the ends over where the hoses go on.

They are the same diameter, so just made sure the pipes were on the right angle before pushing down and bending tangs back over. Been working ok since, but not something I would recommend doing as it will leak fuel if a good seal isn't achieved.

Too young to be old but old enough to know better.

Thanks for the replies. I know all about RPM, Randy and his excellent service, good bloke.  I have brought parts from him in the past; the reason for posting about the fuel pump was I am having strange electrical issues with the bike. I can ride for 20 meters and the bike will shut down, then after 15 odd seconds start back up (I hate electrical shit). I can also hear a relay clicking its head off then stop. I found the pump problem searching for the issue, now here is where it gets tricky. I have a JAP import to Australia which has different wiring to Aussie delivered bikes, mine (according to the Haynes manual) is a US model so when I walk into a Yamaha Stealer here they can't find a fuel pump relay for a 1991 non ABS..... UK / Aussie 1991 models don't have them. So it was like talking to a brick wall. I pulled the relay apart and found some dry joints on the circuit board, re solder all good. I went to the wreckers and found another relay also for an FZX 750 1992 same part number as the 1991 FJ. I should have explained the problem before asking about the pump, I will have a go at fixing anything, a new set of points won't fix the shut off valves?? That's inside the pump right??... I was reading old posts (heated discussions) about reserve switch, fuel pump, and coil interruption for running low on fuel and thought about how much the difference in the wiring between models would play a part. We would need an electrical engineer to figure that one out I think. Cheers
