How would you guys rate your FJ as far as dependability goes? Would you hesitate to ride it across the country?

No shortage of testimonials here for the reliability of the FJ.

I have just returned from a 3800 km ride I only started on Thursday and do about 15,000 a year, the last 2 years about 20,000. I have put 105,000 on mine in 6 years and it has never let me down or even needed to be limped home or repaired on the side of the road.

However, I do take out insurance in the form of the spares I carry. I figure the only things likely to fail that can't be repaired roadside are the coils, the fuel pump (OK, it can be by passed) and the ignition box. I carry spare of each when riding any further from home than a day trip.

I was out here a few days back, saw one vehicle only in a 750 km day, not the place to break down.
The only likelyhood of being stranded I reckon would be a cut tyre or a fall that punched a hole in something (I don't have engine guards)

Having said that, most modern bikes are bullet proof.

Change the oil regularly, avoid short runs and starting it without riding it, and don't fiddle with it anymore than is necessary.  Don't get too carried away with "preventative maintenance" and unnecessary mods. The more you frig around with it, the more trouble it will give you.

If you just want to enjoy your bike, settle for having it running at 95% of perfect. Chasing that last 5% takes way more time and mucking around than it's worth and on the road you won't notice the difference.

FJ ownership is not required for official membership. Some here no longer own an FJ and some have never owned an FJ. Just a good collection of humanity with a few...  more than a few odd balls tossed in to taint the water....

True, but you never really feel like part of the gun club if you keep sowing up with a bow & arrow ;)
