I doubt that you'll get much real improvement by going to a 5.5 instead of the 4.5" wheel you have.
Both have current technology tires available.
Both use tires that are 'low profile' and have short sidewalls.
OEM for FJs was a 150 section tire, and the 4.5" rim will happily take a 160 (or a 170 if you really feel the need to go phatt.

With a 5.5" wheel you can use a 180, but some 180s are too wide and require you space the chain run further outboard.  Is that extra 10mm (nominal) important?

Sabre093

Yes my thoughts exactly. ...probably  go to the 170 though

Hi guys...l have been reading this thread, and l can't say l completely follow the whole process, but hoping that once l get a bike and get in there it will all come together and make more sense.

The bike l am going to look at this weekend is a '92 and it is bone stock.

There is an '89 FZR1000 in my area that is getting parted out, it is complete, and l am thinking that l might want to jump on some parts from it, either for the bike l get, or for someone else who needs them down the road.

I have a few questions...

The FJ got a 17" wheel on the later models...would it be the same identical wheel as the one on this FZR?

I have read that some guys like to swap out the forks with the FZR forks. Would the 1989 FZR forks be a simple swap on a '92 FJ? Would l also want to go with the FZR wheel, or would it matter?

How about the rear wheel?

Any other good parts that can be scavenged from this bike?

The FJ front wheel is 3" wide, the FZR1000 wheel is 3.5" wide. The difference to me is using a 110 vs. a 120 wide front tire. If you don't carve the canyon corners then you can pinch a 120 on a 3" wheel. Hell.... I did that while running the Crest for a few years... The 120 is better for a 3.5" and the 110 is is better for a 3". But if you are not looking for knee dragging performance then enjoy and ride it...
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

The '89 FZR1000 has a 17mm front axle so it's not a straight swap. It can be done. The rear wheel can also be made to fit the FJ. This also is not a straight swap.  Regards, Pete.

1st Generation FZ1 is a better option in my opinion........ you get 43mm diameter fork tubes and cartridge forks with 3.5 x 17 wheel and the swingarm is pretty easy swap with 5.5 x 17 rear wheel. There is a bit of machining involved but nothing that can't be done fairly easily in your own workspace or have an engineering shop do for you.
There are posts about mine here somewhere or ask and I can detail it again.

A first gen FZ1 is also a pretty good substitute for an FJ.

Get your FJ first and ride it.  You might not want/need to do any conversions.

The first money should be for RPM fork valves and rear shock anyway.

Yeah, that seems to be the concensus.
