Hey everybody my name is Josh and I'm from Chicago, I recently just bought a 1990 Yamaha FJ 1200 and so far it runs but every time I try to shifted into gear it stalls I think it might be the push lever comp/slave cylinder but I'm not just sure yet. It's my first bike and I'm not very experienced fixing them but I'm in engineer so I'm pretty good with my hands and figuring things out with diagrams and instructions and I can't wait to get it running. I'm about to buy the slave cylinder repair kit and see if that helps. But if anybody has any input it would be greatly appreciated thanks nice to meet you all and I'm glad to be a part of this awesome page!

Welcome to the forum  :hi:

The side stand switch is often the culprit, even if the side stand is up. The wire routing goes around the oil filter housing and is easy to pinch when reinstalling the housing.

Changing over to the RPM oil filter adaptor will eliminate any further chances of pinching the wires.

Is this a new problem? Did it go into gear before without cutting out? Does the bike lurch forward or just die?

Welcome by the way.

Welcome ! Could be the clutch pack sticking. With the engine off and in first gear, pull the clutch lever in,  and now can you push the bike ?

IF the pack is sticking you will need to rock that bike hard with the clutch lever in and break it free. Could be it hasn't been ridden for a long time, also some oil additives can adversely effect the clutch pack.  IF that is what it is my recommendation is to change oil also.

I just posted after FJMonkey and I think he is leading up in the same direction ? More data :).

Hey guys sorry I haven't been on for a while but I'm going to go through all those things right now but so far what happens is the bike lunges forward a tad bit and then dies when I switch into first gear so I'm going to go through a checklist of all those problems that you guys stated and then I'll post a video of what happens thanks so much for the help guys!! :good2:

Hey new guy and welcome to the group!

I often talk about communication and how one thing said means three different things to the readers.  If you pull the clutch lever in with the engine idling and then drop it into first gear...and the engine just cuts out...dies...stops running...It's likely electrical and related to the side stand switch.  It's only function in life is to make sure you don't take off with the side-stand still down and it will shut the engine off electrically in the process.  They can be faulty after 20+ years and is worth looking into.

If you pull the clutch lever in with the engine idling and then drop it into first gear and the bike lunges forward and then stalls, it's clutch related.  Most likely the clutch master to clutch slave circuit.  Leaky seals, way low on fluid or a ton of air in the lines means the clutch isn't going full disengaged.  That would definitely cause the symptom you're describing.

Post up what you're finding...we'll get to the bottom of this!   :good2:

Well, I'm black knight, thanks for the beautiful black color of my fj 1200 89, not original, but decent, my dad and I, rescue her for a guy in chicago, we found this beauty in CL, he got the bike a year ago, and not ride at all, carbs was mess up, the boots from the heads there was bend, so sucking air like crazy, impossible to sync, I noticed a sound like a vaccum line open, then using a small flashlight for the outside of the boots, I notice the light coming from the outside, so order a complete set of O Ring from RPM, take carb unit down, remove the boots and sanded down, till flat, with the new O ring in the boots no more crazy sound an now everything is seal again, sync carbs with Motion Pro sync toll, new o ring on the carbs and that's it, new and back to normal, she has new tires rear is a Dunlop and front is a Metzeler, new Battery, original exhaust, flat black 2000 f motor paint, and custom graphics, we own a sign shop so that part was easy.
