i have a question:

as my cockpit unit / speedometer broke last week (never imagined how noisy and vibrant this little plastic thingy could get ...) i was searching for a replacement on ebay. i noticed a difference between the one i have build in my 1xj and the obviously original one. looks like i have the 3cw / 3cv one installed (with clock and different fuel meter) ... anyone heard about a mod like that, what part should i order now? i bought my little darling used with 77 km on the speedo 21 years ago from an old yamaha dealer who gave up his store and became pensioner, so no chance to ask him about that anymore ... i'd be thankful for every information, as itm i drive without speedometer, which is pretty uncool as i want to have original milage on my "almost-classic" ... ;-)

thx in advance for all infos!!

If you plan to keep your FJ for some time then consider getting a GPS speedometer. It has already been done by Avationfred...

The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

thx for that idea, but i want to keep everything as original as possible ... i have a bike gps too, so i have no use for any hightech replacements ;-) my bike needs more 1 year to have official classic status in europe, which means no more taxes, cheaper insurance, no more inspections, stuff like that ... but this is only for original bikes, no one will notice or claim a 3cw cockpit in an 1xj, but this replacement is too obvious for not being original ...

anyhow, thx a lot for the hint!

FJmonkey

I was able to modify an '84/85 speedo to fit my '86. So it can be done if that helps. And there are better looking analog looking GPS speedos that look near OEM that have also been installed. So perhaps the offender will post up to help you out.

lol ;-) does the offender have some pix of the analog looking? and are they available with kilometers instead of miles as well? i live in portugal, so we have everything metric here ...

If you won't look and poke around a little, then we are less likely to help you.... Its OK to search for what you want.

To understand your question on your broken gauges. I have a few questions.

1. Is what broke, one of the gauges, or the whole instrument assembly?

2. If it is one specific gauge. They each are replaceable without effecting the others.

3. From the photo in your avatar and a previous post that you own an '86 1tx. The fuel gauge and clock assembly is OEM for the '86. The FJ1100's came with a fuel gauge and no clock.

4. If you have not searched on eBay UK, eBay Germany, eBay France, and eBay US, you may want to give each a search. There are many sellers that will ship to Portugal.

I hope this is helpful

If you are having no luck finding gauges. I have an instrument assembly without the fuel/clock unit attached to the white housing. No clear lens and black bezel. I also have a single speedometer unit and a single tachometer. The speedometers are in MPH.

To understand your question on your broken gauges. I have a few questions.

1. Is what broke, one of the gauges, or the whole instrument assembly?

just the speedo is broke ... or kinda semi-broke ... sometimes it works, sometimes the needle is jumping up and down and it makes a terrible loud noise putting everything into strange vibrations as well ... so i disconnected it and go without speedo itm ... fuel gauge makes some probs as well sometimes, as the needle "jumps" behind the stopper on hard bumpers sometimes ... drilled a little hole and prepared a wire-hook to put it back again time by time, so its no real big deal, but both of that failures now make me think of replacing the complete cockpit unit ...

2. If it is one specific gauge. They each are replaceable without effecting the others.

see above ...

maybe we have different model specs in u.s. and europe?! i bought the bike in germany 21 years ago labeled as "1xj", so maybe there are slight differences to the 1tx? have no clue ... search on ebay germany and europe showed up "my" cockpit (for type 1xj, 1986 ...) without clock and the cockpit looking like the one i have installed is labeled for type 3 cw .... so for the model coming after my 86 1xj ... at least in europe ... point on that is: i have definitely the "3cw" installed on my "1xj" lol ... always thought its original, but i never compared with any other 86's fj ... must admit its the first time, my fj "makes trouble" ... usually i simply ride it everyday ;-)

4. If you have not searched on eBay UK, eBay Germany, eBay France, and eBay US, you may want to give each a search. There are many sellers that will ship to Portugal.

was searching on german and european ebay sites ... no need to check up the portuguese site, as the fj was never officially imported to portugal, i brought mine with me from germany as i moved here ... availability is not the big problem, my question is - do i have a mod or is this original and what replacement to buy now ... want to be sure before spending a 200 quits for the wrong parts ;-)

I hope this is helpful
