George, even though those those oem valve springs measure out I would invest in some aftermarket springs which utilize better spring steel.
Ask Randy he knows.. He has them

Here is an interesting read on engine break in.  http://mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm"
That particular article always sparks debate on every motor forum I've been on. Really great read, and that's how I did my 250cc scooter. Rolling up on 10k miles and seems fine.. Now...where did I put that popcorn?? (popcorn)

hey George , you are doing fine with taking your time and getting it right .

we all fall into that trap of rushing to finish the FJ because the rally is coming ....  :drinks:

Pat: Thanks for the info on the springs. I am still thinking that one over $$$.  I will say that every other spring in the FJ has proven to be weak and has been replaced (sacked fork springs, carb diaphragm springs, sacked rear shock spring, shifting paw spring etc.). I have to assume the valve sprigs are no better.

"novaraptor": That article didn't seem to stir much up.  I thought it was interesting and he also has some thoughts on porting. http://mototuneusa.com/power_news_--_think_fast.htm  I didn't assemble quiet as dry as he recommends but did go lightly on the oil. When the cylinder was on I turned the engine over a few times and wiped down the excess oil in the bores. Bores are sill coated. Just can't see any good to oil dripping down the walls.  Not going to do any "porting" just cleaned up some spots in the chamber.  I am not that good of a rider to appreciate the gains porting and I would probably go in the hole power wise "experimenting".

Mark: Taking it slow because I like working on the bike, at least up until now.  The weather has improved to the point I could be riding... So some pressure is on.  Also there is the economics of the deal.  Work as far as I can with what I have then wait.  In between I focus on the small stuff like coil and head light relay mod (which I have yet to do), oil temp sender, some polishing etc.. My schedule is to get it wrapped up by the end of April so I can put some break in miles on and an oil change before any rally's or road trips.

Scott:  I am sure you are OK. You are talented enough to pull it off my friend.

"rlucas": "Don't go back to work until 2 weeks after a Rally".  That's the sign of a really good rally!  Must have had one hell of a time for that to happen ! :drinks: :drinks:

Ever had the Red Cap Experience? Two weeks recovery time is about right.

George, the KTM has a few miles left in it, though the headlight failed the last time out, which has kinda deterred me from riding until it's fixed.  Soon ...

As far as your oil pickup screen, I was told that mine was improperly installed, as it was discovered laying in the oil pan, not attached to the pickup tube.  Be careful you install it properly.  And leave no lint behind, as the pickup screen will tell the tale, and maybe affect your oil pressure as well.

Thanks Ed. I think it is on correctly. It snapped back on back where it came from. Did clean out some what appeared to be clutch disk fiber. Not much but worth cleaning the screen. I did read one of Skymasters threads where he said it was hard to get on. But mine seemed to go back on with a slight snap.  I kept it clean inside the motor. No paper towel wiping etc..

Hopefully the KTM headlight is just a bulb and not something to cosmic. The new bikes scare me when it comes to fixing them.  I guess if I got my head into it I wouldn't be as shy of them.  But I have a limited amount of RAM in my head.  When something go's in,  something has to leave..... And I got some good shit in there that I want to keep  :drinks:
