Anyone tried running yellow strobes in headlamp assembly for daytime safety.

I don't know if any members have a modulator installed for the headlight. I do know that there is a federal law covering motorcycle headlight modulation.

http://www.timberwoof.com/motorcycle/faq/modulatorlaw.html

I have seen posts on facebook about riders getting stopped by LEO's. I know that the laws differ from state to state in the U.S..

My suggestion is, If you are going to use a headlight modulator, carry a copy of the Federal law with you at all times.

Is that actually legal? I've checked into some of the regulations here in Ontario and it seems it's a bit of a grey area according to Ontarioticket.com  http://www.ontarioticket.com/motor-vehicle-lighting.php#1:

" Lights are prohibited or restricted based on their combination and/or the direction they are visible from.  Flashing red lights, visible from any direction on a vehicle, are restricted to law enforcement vehicles only.  This restriction does not include four way flashers or tapping the brake pedal to produce an on and off effect with the brake lights.  In addition to this, red lights and red and blue combinations of lights to the front are also restricted to law enforcement vehicles.  Flashing blue lights are restricted to police vehicles and snow removal vehicles, but only while they are actually engaged in the removal of snow (or de-icing, etc).  Flashing green lights are restricted to volunteer fire fighters.

Of course these sections are always open to interpretation by police officers laying charges and ultimately by a Justice of the Peace who determine guilt."

Basically if the cop is in a pissy mood you will get a ticket, as he will be paid overtime to go to court anyhow.  I've never noticed anyone here have any strobes other tham emergency/service vehicles.  It may be different in other jurisdictions, but I would think the authorities like to keep a strict line between what their vehicles have and what the rest of the civvies are allowed to use.

This may be an option to make your FJ seen better by cagers.

Thanks for the pic was reluctant to drill holes in the back of my headlamp that is the perfect place to put them. The ones I got are single led strobes in yellow. As far as the law is concerned SC is pretty good to riders unless they show their butts.

Hi three nice running lights I've been thinking of fitting some , here in NZ they have to turn off automatically when the headlights are turned on . Can't seem to find a wire that will do this on my 91. How do yours work ?john NZ

You will have to add a relay for that to happen. The power for the running lights will go through the NC contacts on the relay. The power for the relay coil will come from the headlight. When the headlight is turned on the relay will go to NO and shut off the power to the running lights. Thats the way I would do it. Be a good time to do the headlight mod using the NC contacts for running lights and NO contacts for headlight.  Dave
A pistol is like a parachute, if you need one and don't have one you will never need one again.

Hi John NZ,
that's my fj in the pictures, I've wired them into the dash light circuit, I've got a switch in the headlight circuit so I can turn that off or on, the running lights come on with the ignition so are on all the time. When you said about them having to turn off when the headlight comes on I checked the rules here in Oz and we are the same, looks like I may have to re-think it. So you can use a dipped headlight as a running light, or running lights but not the two together. So according to the law if I want to use running lights I have to turn the headlight off, seems to defeat the purpose to me seeing as the idea is to be more conspicuous. I think I'm just going to run them as is with headlight on as well and see what happens, if I get pulled over I'll plead ignorance and hope the coppers in a good mood.

Anyway all that aside the lights are from a pommy company called Bikevis and they actually have a distributor in NZ http://www.fastbikegear.co.nz/

There are only two either side what looks like a third in the photos is just a reflection.

That's right Arnie if you google running lights ADR's they say that running lights must be wired to go off when the headlight comes on. Totally stupid if you ask me.
That's a nice set up on yours, how long have you been running it like that? I'm going to run mine with the headlight and see what happens, hopefully the coppers have more important things to worry about.

The running lights (led strips) have been there for a couple of years now.  Not had any interest from the cops.  I now also have 2 x 10W Cree XML 'bicycle' headlights set up as Driving Lights up near the top of the windscreen.

They are wired to come ON and OFF with the High beam of the headlight.

They work great, but it does seem a bit dark when I switch back to the dipped low beam only from the headlight.

I've been looking at the cree lights I think that will be my next addition.
