Maybe I need an '89 frame to use the upper shock mount on my spare '86 frame???

 Thanks Mark. Too many issues to deal with in a short period of time. I am quite interested in your progress with the shock. I was thinking of doing the same thing with an 84 I am restoring and did not realize that the pivot location for the linkage,as well as the shock to frame mount was different than the 89 frame.
What year frame has Randy given you? Sounds like you are on your way with solutions, just require an in between bike to ride. Be careful with those in between bikes. I have six of them now and cannot decide on which one to divest. Good luck and thanks for sharing the info. It saved me a lot of aggravation in the direction I was taking with mine.

My spare frame is an '86/'87 frame, so it will need the upper mount modified to stay with an '89 style shock. If I get the '89 shock installed on my '86 then I will also post up the project for others. If I am going to jump through this many hoops to get dog-bones, then I will help others decide if they want the same challenge.

Needless to say if I can be of any help let me know.  I feel your dilemma.  The upper shock mount is no big deal to me but if your engine needs work then perhaps another bike becomes an option for sure.  No easy answer.   :scratch_one-s_head:  Here to help any way I can.

With all the bad weather you should be in the garage "MAKIN IT HAPPEN" .. why not just weld a ride height adjustable lower mount onto the shock? Yeah I know Kaboom.

You just gotta take some care with it.

Seems you are going a long way to fit dog bones on a 86 for adjustable ride height . Forest for the trees .

I still gotta do 2nd gear as well , so ride your ass up here and we will knock em out in a weekend.

You are very correct!!! Thinking that having dog-bones as a bolt-on for my '86 led me down this rabbit hole, now I have to decide if I want to finish and find the bottom... Or cut my losses and get a second FJ...

Man I don't know what to tell ya there . I have done the second bike thing before and we have so much ridin time here in cali that I could never seem to take the time to go back and fix the other bike. It took me 2yrs last time.

I will confess if I was gonna get another year fj it would be the 89-90 ,so we agree on that. :pardon:

I could live with a Silver and White, it has a Red stripe. Any other color would be changed to match my '86... I think the technique is now called a "Derek"... Invented in Canada by another ambulance rider. His work shows for its self, awesome....

I cannot understand the multitude of bikes for sale stripped of front fenders, painted flat black or some equally ugly color and called a bobber or cafe racer. Then the sellers think they are worth 1000-3000 dollars more than the original. Maybe I'm just of an older generation.  Dave
