Unstable speedo needle above 110kmh

I have tried a search for this topic but nothing came up.

So if anyone can point me to a previous thread on the subject that would be great.

As the title says - speedo needle goes majorly erratic above 110kmh but settles down again around 140kmh. I had the cable inner out and cleaned it. Its not frayed I gave it a light machine oil on the lower 80% and put it back in.

Is this a common wear issue and is there a fix or is it replacement / put up with it ?

I had the exact same problem with my speedo. Basically it is caused by wear and old age. There are 2 solutions.

One is.....There is a place in the San Diego area that can rebuild your speedometer. Pat Conlon or the FJmonkey should be able to get the name for you.

Second is.... Replace with a new electronic/digital speedo.

Here is a link to probably the easiest speedo swap. This Speedhut GPS speedo pretty much drops in to the existing hole in the bezel.

I have installed a digital set of gauges. This is much more involved and requires a lot of cutting of the instrument housing.

A few of us are using the GPS style speedo and they have worked great.

I quite like that GPS speedo conversion.

My only concern here in NSW is that it a requirement to record mileage at the annual vehicle inspection.
Without an odometer function this can't happen and will prevent me from registering the bike............

BTW

how do you go in road tunnels with a GPS speedo ?

Sydney CBD is like a rabbit warren with speed cameras installed...............

If I fit the R6 front end, I suppose I could attempt to graft an R6 speedo(assuming it is electronic drive) into the FJ nacelle ?
I wasn't planning on using the R6 front wheel but maybe I would need to consider this now or attempt to adapt the R6 sender for the FJ wheel.......

Here is a eBay link that shows that there is the odometer and trip meter. There are also many other functions included.

I do believe that you can order directly from speedhut and they will pre-set the odometer to the current mileage of your FJ. You can send a PM to Bozo and get his first hand experience with the speedhut mod. He is also in Australia.

Jools..... when i put the FZ1 front end on my FJ I fitted a similar one to this into the instrument housing (replacing all the gauges and indicators). It records speed by calibrating to the circumference of the front wheel, with magnetic sensor on the fork leg and a small round magnet in one of the brake rotor rivets.

The model I bought is no longer listed but this is near enough.

Hi Fred

sorry, I think I misread the info on the posting. When I went to their website I could see that option was available - but nowhere for the remote button selection as was mentioned. I guess this has to be put in the notes section under customise.

It is certainly a good looking unit and fits in well in the original console.

For me, this has been one of the best and most useful mods I have ever done to the FJ, a GPS (self contained) HUD unit that projects my speed onto the screen. I have a working speedo but don't find it easy to focus on at a glance at highway speed. The speedo continues to record mileage and I can refer to it in tunnels.
$100, it's held on with HD velcro and plugs in so if I wish I can just pull it off and throw it on the car dashboard or another bike.

Noel

that is another good option - how is it bright sunlight (late afternoon/early morning) ?

This is the first bike I've really used on the road while I have had to wear glasses and the size of the font on the speedo makes it hard to read. This might be because its a new bike and I'm not familiar with the needle position - If I take my glasses off I'm ok but then I can't read the road signs till I'm on them.

Growing old....................... :boredom:

So,

I thought I would take advantage of their discount offer and ordered one of the GPS speedo's from Speedhut.

Typical - when I took the bike for a run yesterday, after claeaning and reoiling the speedo cable inner it had almost eliminated the flicker. Well it was manageable and readable, but I was wondering then about the accuracy.
So the GPS will still get fitted when it gets here.

The GPS unit will probably be more accurate.  According to my GPS my speedo reads 5-8 mph faster than I am going at 80mph. I like Fred's conversion.  If and when my speedo gives up I would probably convert or disconnect it and use the GPS. I have two holders for the RAM mount one for the handheld GPS and one for my 7" auto GPS.  In the local area I just use a handheld GPS on the mount just as a reference and to on rare occasion to track my route.

Post some pictures when you get it mounted.  :good2:
