retraction what I think I see is internal to the seal. Enough frustration for now.

Mike, I will be at the shop tomorrow if you need to give me a call. Post up some pictures of where you are with the old seal and I can walk you through it.

You guys are awesome. Not sure you can see, the bottom third of the seal is tearing off. like its glued in there. Hey its been in there a looong time. On the inside, between the seal and shaft I can see what appears to be a keeper but I am afraid to try and pull t out. If your familiar with the seal there is a  spring like ring inside the seal. It could be that. Looking at an exploded view from a Yamaha parts site; I don't see a clip or keeper it seems to be a press fit.

The seal has a spring like ring that keeps pressure and helps make the seal. It does have a lip on the back that helped during the factory installation. Don't be afraid, pry that bastard out with a small screwdriver or pick. If you are free early this morning I can swing by and provide support. I used a small drywall screw like a #6, screwed it into the center of the seal and then used pliers to grab the screw and pull it out. It got the seal part of the way out, the rest was easy once the seal was part way out.

Later today I have a ride scheduled with Simi_Ed, so early works. I might be back from Mexico by Sunday so I might be able to visit/ride then as well.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Mike, that is the outer rubber coating of the seal that came off. You have to get to the metal core of the seal before you can get it pried out of the block. That is why you have to be careful of both the crank and the case surfaces.

You can see the groove in the case where the lip is going to be holding the original seal in and you will end up tearing that lip off as it comes out.

It will look like this when the seal is removed.

I also have the seal puller Garth listed in hand and will have it listed on the website tonight.

Mark (Monkey) has a good tip.....................

Drill two small holes in the face of the seal. Install some sheet metal screws into the holes. Pry on the screws to pop the seal out.

I used this trick on a Geo Metro cam seal once, and it worked great.

Guys, it wont work and the screws will just pop out. Then the metal is now going to tear as you try and pry it out. The seal has to by pried out because it has to tear the lip off of the seals.

Thanks for the info Randy (that's why we love you)
I wasn't aware there was a lip preventing the seal from coming out.

What do you do if you tear it off?  Does it just get left in there when you install the new seal? or do you somehow get the torn off lip out of there before you install the new seal?

I usually will not tear completely off and will come out with the bottom half of the seal. If a section does get stuck in there, just use a pick to get it out.

:dance2: Mission accomplished. Ok now that it's done I realize this is no big deal...you crank splitting mod kings can stop laughing now... but there will be other opportunities to snicker and shake your heads the down the road. Hmm why does my starter spin free sometimes? It always starts eventually should I be concerned?  Thank you all for the help. Randy the pictures helped a great deal. Mark, I pried that bastard out alright. Came out clean. Remains to be seen if my leak stops.
