I was just looking at the FJ1100 engine I picked up on the S/n pad there is nothing stamped. A couple years ago I had another 84 1100 that nothing was stamped in the pad.

Did yamaha have a batch of bad engines early on an they just swapped them out? Another one the upper case has a pad for the 3rd alt bolt but its undrilled.

Any old timers know any thing about that?

If we tried that Down Under Mr Plod would be paying us a visit, saying something like
"Hey ho. Wat av we got ear then"? Closely followed by the obligatory yellow canary :mail1:
I for one would be very suspicious.  :diablo:

Most likely it is a replacement case. The replacement cases I have used in the past as well as the one one my shelf do not anything stamped on the boss. I have never notice the alternator bolt, but I will have to check it out.

my 84 also has no s/n on the casing,so i inquired to yamaha and was told that the frame number was also classed as the engine number on the early batch of 1100.before i brought my bike to check that it was not stolen on the vehicle rego and it is listed with the same numbers for frame and engine.
as for the blank alt bolt hole on the upper casing, the 1100 has a two bolt alt and a 1200 has a 3 bolt alt. lot of the the machinery i work on the casings are tooled for the next model even when its a new release model they seam the work well in advance.

Well there you go hey?
The serials on my 84 FJ1100 are exactly the same.
And obviously any replacement parts would have no serials stamped into them.
The stuff you don't think of until it happens  :unknown:
