cold weather clutch

 I went for a ride and it was fairly cold out the other day. I pulled out my 86 J and started it and let it warm up for a about a minute or so and off I went. I rolled on the throttle a little after a couple miles into my ride and the clutch was slipping. It seemed to get better the longer into my ride. When I got to my friends house I was there for about 2 hrs and the sun was out, I figured she should be plenty warm still and she fired right up. Again when I went down the road I noticed it was slipping again, what a dangerous condition. Are FJ's known to slip when cold and need to be fully up to temp before kookaloo happens. I had no issue all summer ringing its neck and it ran like a well tuned noisy clock as always but I do hear a sound like marbles rolling around in the bottom.     Donnie

I've ridden mine in subfreezing temps and never experienced what you are describing.
And I actually love how mine snicks into gears when shifting, before it warms up and needs more encouragement to change gears.

I had my 86 out today and found that the clutch was slipping at the start of my ride. It got better as I got further into the ride. The bike had been sitting for a couple of weeks because of poor weather and the fact that I am working away from home. Was a great day for a ride 20C amd sunny. Just about time to put her away for the winter. Put seafoam in the tank and filled up with premium. If the weather is good next weekend might get for another ride. The insurance runs out on the 3rd. of November. Kookaloo Big R

The FJ does not like cold, let e'r warm up, then flog e'r all you want... Not sure about the clutch, I let her warm up first... Just like every woman I have ever known...  :blush:

A clutch with marginal grip will slip more on cold oil than hot, and as those of you with oil temp gauges fitted know, it takes quite a while for the oil to get up to temp.

If the clutch is in good condition it won't slip hot or cold but then you shouldn't be flogging it cold anyway.

If it's slipping cold under moderate power, it's time to fix it, and how best to go about that I can't say.  :biggrin:

Best way to solve that problem is to drain the oil... Examine the oil for metal shavings.... Then take clutch cover off to see condition of clutch... Some times clutch basket can show signs of wear... Just go through basic routine maintenance.... I have had that happen on another bike I had... Found out it was a broken tooth on a clutch plate in 3rd gear...

True that Mark, always better results after warm up!!!!  Thanks again for the answers to my sometimes lazy questions fellas, greatly appreciated. This was my first true season on the 86FJ with many of my hard earned dollars going to a guy named ''Randy" !!!!!!!!!!! Motor was flawless, breaks and front end need some love. I dont want to brag about torque cause someone with a 190hp ride will laugh at me.  The FJ has fantastic bottom end among many other great qualities.  Cheers Donnie  :hi:

Donnie, if I have not already said so then welcome to the club. It is widely known that the FJ likes/needs to warm up before being ridden hard. So if you have cold issues.... Wait till it warms up and see if its get better.... Kookaloo...
