Old topic but this is probably a good thing.

My understanding from discussions on other boards is that in California lane splitting is NOT legal. What this means is that there is no law giving you the right to lane split. You can split lanes because there is no law or rule against it.

If they start placing rules and regulations on lane splitting, or even recomendations, this opens up the door for further regulation or even putting a law in place making it illegal.

Or we can blame Obama.

That is incorrect, it is legal to lane split/filter in California.

Here is the language found in the current DMV motorcycle handbook, "Lane splitting in a safe and prudent manner is not illegal in the state of California"

I have one at home right now that I was reading last night as I have to take all of my drivers tests next month...auto, commercial and motorcycle

Yes, lane splitting is an old topic, but the fact that some do-gooder has forced the CHP to stop it's defacto endorsement of the practice is not.

Not sure why you chose to pick that scab, but it's stuff like that that has had me reading this forum less, and posting even more infrequently.  :unknown:

Although, the 'impacted bowel' thread that has Noel so distressed has been mildly entertaining...

Here is the complete language from the DMV handbook; Motorcycle Handbook Ride Within Your Abilities

Lane Splitting

The term lane splitting, sometimes known as lane sharing, filtering, or white-lining refers to the process of a motorcyclist riding between lanes of stopped or slower-moving traffic or moving between lanes to the front of traffic stopped at a traffic light.
Lane splitting should not be performed by inexperienced riders. When choosing to lane split, skilled motorcycle riders should consider the following:

Traffic flow - Travel at a speed that is no more than 10 mph faster than other traffic; danger increases at higher speed differentials. Lane splitting is not advised when traffic flow is at 30 mph or faster; danger increases as overall speed increases.
Traffic lanes - Lane splitting is encouraged to be done between the #1 and #2 lanes; typically, it is safer to lane split in these lanes than between other lanes.
Environment - The total environment should be considered, including the width of the lanes, size of surrounding vehicles, the roadway, weather, and lighting conditions.
Hazards - Riders should anticipate possible movements by other road users and be alert at all times.

NOTE:These general guidelines assume a high level of riding competency and experience and do not guarantee to keep you safe. Every rider has the ultimate responsibility for his or her own decision making and safety. Riders must be conscious of reducing crash risk at all times.

And the sad part is they are safer drivers than many of the SOB's with a license... They know how to stay under the radar....

Post count aside, whining is whining. The Obama comment was completely innocuous, yet you lament it as a reason you don't frequent here more often? Get off your high horse. It was a joke. I found it especially ironic that every post of yours comes from "not a lib", yet you whine about somebody else tossin a jab?

Honestly dude, you haven't been here long enough to know any history of this group or me in particular.

I really couldn't care any less about what you think.   :boredom:

I think I own that title on this site (5200 posts), not that it's worth much. Just having too much time on my hands (STYX, I love that song).... And enjoyment of spending time with this group and it's members, including face to face rally and ride time... Coming from the Monkey, can we fling less poo? Ride and enjoy... I need to make some rallies on the East side of the USA...  :drinks:
