Forks, I want new front suspentions!

I'll need to have a project on the bike for the up coming winter period...

I have decided to replace the front end... Forks, trippletree, rim.... the hole "shabang"  :wacko3:
Why? because I want to :good2:

I am happy with the way the bike is, but moditus is starting to itch and I have to have my medication...

So I am thinking replacing the front suspention with new (or newer) forks from either an 98-04 R1 or even newer, and having to raplce the calipers as well, or perhaps FZR... Can't make up my mind, but I will..

I know theres a ton of forks threads here, I would like some honest, well though sugjestions and ideas for a front suspetion..

Perhaps there are suspetnion from other bikes I should consider as well? One criteria though, I want to be able to adjust them... other then that, I am open for suggjestions...

Cheers

Ken

Ken,

I would refer you to members axiom-r and giantkiller.

Both have done up side down fork mods, using different forks.

Jefff "jscgdunn" was down here for the night a few days ago and he also has an R1 front end conversion.  He indicated it was almost a bolt on. I think he used the FJ triple tree or at least the lower end and welded a new fork stop on.  But you will need the fronts end, front wheel and brakes.  You might PM him for the details. It does look great. He also converted his swing are and shock. Now he has ans FJ/R1.

The picture is also in the gallery if you want a larger view.

I used 2008 GSXR1000 front on both my 86 and my 89.  Chose the gsxr front because I was told it was over sprung stock. And a lot of the racers were even putting lighter springs in. So for the heavier Fj with me(285lbs) on it I was hoping it might work. Its almost perfect. You need to press out the Fj stem have the stem built up with weld and then machined down to fit the gsxr triple bottom. Then a small collar on the top to fit the Fj stem to the larger hole in the gsxr upper triple tree. Then have extensions made for the forks. And I took the gsxr clippons and flipped them from under the triple tree to the top cut off the bars so you have just the round clamp. Made the risers out of 3/4" x1 1/2" aluminum bar stock (with a jigsaw and a belt sander).some 7/8" aluminum round bar for the bars themselves. Drill and tap the bar ends for the Fj bar end weights. Weld it up.and you have aluminum Fj bars you can make them the same as the original Fj bars or make the risers longer if you want. If you make the fork extensions a little bit longer you can have adjustable bar height like I have about an inch. Custom length braided brake and clutch lines from Spiegler. A speedo like mine (magnet on rotor bolt). Or GPS speedo. And you have inverted forks and awesome 2008 gsxr brakes.
And about 12lbs total weight savings off the front of the bike.

Jeff, did you do the usual upgrades to your old brakes ( EBC HH pads, lines, m/c) before changing to those?

Giantkiller, thanks for the input. I might contact you later on if i choose to go for the gixxer mod. It sure looks interesting. How is the instalment of the gixxer  forks compared to the R1?

George, the forks looks nice!
What do you mean by  welding a new fork stop? Would it be possible to just use the R1 tripple tree, and handlebars or will it come in conflict with other parts?

Hi Ken

See my project (and/or Axioms) write up for the details.  I used 2009 r1 forks triples wheel. Top triple is 2009 Fz1.

Noel: Brakes are awesome.  Six piston calipers.  Just part of the conversion.

Ken, that picture is Jeff's bike so I would have to let him explain the stop.  It is the turning left/right stop for the forks.  Jeff did a great job ! And you only see half the story in that picture.

Jeff, hope you don't mind me showing your bike off !

I just figured out how to post pictures with my old phone. So I was going to go back and do writeups with pictures of all the mods I've done... Then my phone got smashed. Lost most of the pics. Now I will have to take them apart and get new pics. Will do when weather turns cold.  And hopefully post up the turbo drag toy build... And now back to the regularly scheduled program.
