Does anyone remember LIBRARIES???

I stopped by the Orlando Public Library, Main Branch the other day to renew my card and find some books on CNC machining and fixture design.

HOLY COW! The entire second floor is completely devoid of books, and the third floor shelves are rapidly dwindling.

Anyway, got some interesting machining books, and happened across a copy of "Proficient Motorcycling" by David Hough. (I posted a "soft" copy I found on the internet a while back here: http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=7072.0 )

GREAT BOOK! (To me, "books" are nicer to read than "soft copies".) I have SO MUCH yet to learn about good riding techniques; turns especially.

Don't mean to ramble, just wanted to make a recommendation on something that can help us stay alive out there.

Libraries?? Oh yeah, those were the places my Pa would take me to after hitching up the horse and buggy, but then he lost the buggy whip and, long story short, couldn't buy another cause the buggy whip factory had closed, so we stopped going...
Actually, spent a lot of time in libraries while growing up. Loved em, but stopped going when they became "community centers" and started showing old movies and having local schools performing plays and having art shows, and becoming less and less a library..

I am always proud of my home community which has not only kept the Libraries, but recently enlarged the network and made major improvements to the existing locations.

Interestingly this was accomplished with a small property tax increase that, at least in my district, won by a landslide margin of over 97% of the voters.

My mom was a Librarian and a English teacher, so I grew up knowing the Dewey Decimal system by heart.

She's been gone now for 20 years and while I still miss her, I'm glad to see she is not around to see the decline in hard copy sections of our library's.

I grew up loving books....but my grandkids?

hope for your mom's sake "a librarian and a English teacher"had at least one typo, or is it an "Americanism" to not use "an" instead of "a " before a word beginning with a vowel? ........ not sure if English should be capitalized.
since my kids were little we always gave them books on every occasion we could , instead of things like Easter eggs,or if we were going on a long journey in the car,the oldest lad just started moving his stuff to his new flat, he needed one trip in the wife's car just for his books, I suggested that as some of the books were children's stories he sell or give them away, and he said he couldn't as he needed them.. I hope hes not planning a family  I'm to young to be a granddad

I am lucky to have grown up in a family of readers and spent much time in libraries. Alot of my father daughter time was spent in libraries and book stores with her. It paid off yesterday as she graduated from college early and already had a job. However she absolutely refuses to reciprocate and will not go to Home Depot with me at all!    Dave

Yep, auto correct was responsible for capitalizing English (she would really roll over on that one)... my mum was an Irish english teacher.

What does this "convict" have ta do with the price of fish?   ......."free" ends in a vowel (e). therefore "an is correct prOceeding a vowel!"... are you questioning my an cestory! (which is where I learned how ta correctly spell "gaol" btw!) .....or are you making shit hit the fan?  (yeah I know..I need a ride real bad!)
