I did 700 kms today which makes 4000 in the last month on my new EK ZZZ chain and I am yet to adjust it. I'm impressed!

Tank slapper continues to do a great job but starting to loser some of its adhesion but has a lot of life left in it yet and it has done a lot of work. I only use it on long rides so it is off and on all the time. If it lasts till the end of the year I will be pleased and I will get some more. This time I'll source the materials and cut my own.

New toy today was Scottoiler eSystem. Seems to do exactly what it claims, between this and the EK chain I think I've minimised maintenance as much as I can short of getting a shaft drive.

Most of you probably don't live in places that require attention to speed like we do. My friend this week got a fine in the mail, $180 for 4 kph over a posted speed limit, that's about 2 1/2 mph! This even applies at highway speeds and the govt can't roll out new detection equipment fast enough.
Anyway, I find it increasingly difficult homing in on my speedo to such fine tolerances at a glance and don't like casting my eyes that far down. Not so bad if you're only having the occasional look but a nuisance when checking it constantly. GPS is good but mounted even further down than the speedo.

I fitted this a few weeks back almost just for fun and I can't believe how good it is, it's fantastic (that's not an absolutism is it?) It's a GPS HUD, so just throw it on the dashboard and plug it in (has a lighter socket) and away you go, bloody brilliant (can I say that without sounding like an expert?)


I was going to so something about the silver buttons but after today, I don't think I'll bother, you don't really see them when you're riding.


So, before you fall about laughing I would suggest someone who doesn't drive you nuts tries it out and reports back (with an edited post), you would be surprised at how well it works. It can be read in full sun, you can adjust it to throw anywhere on the screen you want and I have it mounted on HD Velcro.
Being GPS, it is a stand alone unit so only needs power. About $100.

Still trying to get on top on the Sena 20s intercom. They have become too smart, it does an amazing array of things but all from a near impossible to remember sequence of only 2 buttons and a wheel. Many of the features can be accessed by voice commands and a few times I have ended up in Siri on my phone and anyone that has that knows what a lucky dip it is at the best of times except when you riding you can't see you phone.

Nice.  I like it.  Nothing wrong with keeping yours eyes up looking forward.  2 1/2 mph over isn't much !  Lots of speedo's are really not that accurate.  My old FJ unit at 70mph would bounce 10 mph...  My replacement speedometer is rock solid but reads at least 5 mph + - fast compared to my GPS.  I don't know what the accuracy is of the GPS is for that matter.

Tim, that is the standard FJ 1200 screen for the non US models. I don't know the story behind why you never got them but they're pretty good. You can ride with your visor up, which I'm prone to doing, and they offer good weather protection. They're a bit noisy but at least your head is out of the airflow (up to about 6'). They are made of transparent steel, or so it would seem.

As I understand it, in Canada, the bikes were shipped with both windshields.  I got both with the first 92 I bought and currently have it on my FJR1 bike.  There is a noticeable difference (better) in how it handles wind (I am 6'3).  I wish I knew Noels' secret for getting it so clear?

Noel has put up a bit of a guide here somewhere on how he gets his screen crystal clear, lot of elbow work involved. I keep offering to send my screen to him to get the same treatment, but he hasn't taken me up on the offer yet.........   :biggrin:

Fred, there are many to choose from, just enter "GPS HUD" into the ebay search. I chose that one because of it's relatively low profile, although I just looked on ebay then and there are some that probably blend in a bit more and are all black, they start at about $50.
As I mentioned, you tend not to see the unit when riding. This really is one of the most functional things I've done to my bike in a long while with very little install time and modest cost.

Jeff, having been chastised this week for being a "self proclaimed expert" and left somewhat chastened by the the experience I am reluctant to post details fearing more criticism.  :biggrin:

It's no secret but it is a lot of two steps forward and one step back while playing with different abrasive materials and grits as no two plastics ever seem to be the same hardness. I didn't realise when I first got the bike the screen was actually meant to be clear. The end result was very satisfying though.

While the job is not too bad, it is best suited to someone with a patient nature but not one I would bother with if a replacement was available.

I'll take this as an excuse to gratuitously post these photos, again.


I do not claim to be an expert at this but after 45 years of practice I'm happy with the results

I lightly polish it every time I wash it and remove it once a year for a machine polish. I do the same with my slip ons, hand polish them frequently and remove them once a year and give them a good going over on the rag wheel. It's a lot easier and faster to keep them looking good than trying bring them back.

Well Noel, after 45 years of practice, I'd say you have the technique down pretty well!  I'll go out on a limb here and call you an 'expert'.  So I guess I get the arrows now, right?

Proper FJ screen ?

Not my experience.  Now I'm not as short as Noel, but I don't find this "letterbox" screen to be anywhere tall enough to give me adequate weather protection, nor for the airflow coming over it to be quiet. 
The "fins" are good to allow you to attach an extension.

That HUD GPS unit looks interesting Noel. The urine cup reservoirs on my brake and clutch masters do partially obstruct my tach and speedo so that I have to move my head to fully view them.

The police in British Columbia are pretty serious about speed limits these days and I can't afford any more tickets. A couple of weeks ago "someone I know" got pulled over for excessive speed on my way to work in the car. It was alleged that said idiot was travelling 136 kmh in a 90 zone. My car was impounded for a week ($250), $368 fine and an annual Driver Risk Premium of $320 on my birthday for the next 3 years. Overall a pretty costly event. If I get any more the price goes way up. Anything that reminds you of your speed seems like a good idea to me!
