Conti Motions

Need to get new rubber for the FJ. I've used these Contis on the Duc with very good results but they don't have the 150/80x16 rear for the FJ. Anyone used their 150/70 or the 160/80? I'm trying to stay with a matched set.

I didn't know that the Conti-Motions were available in the 16" dia. for the rear.

I am on my 2nd set of the Conti's, but I am running a 180/55/17 on a GSXR wheel.

Avon Storms --Av46 come in 150/80/16 --- Fronts Storm II  AV55 -- for fronts with stock 3in rim ( 17" ) I run the 110 -- if you have modified front with 3.5 inch rim - run the 120.   110's fit 2.75-3" where 120 fit 3-3.5" --- the 110 best fits the smaller rim - no pinching effect

The 150/70 is actually a 17" rear. The 160/80 and a 180/60 are the 16" rears they offer.

I can't help too much as far as I  have not  seen the sizes you mention on our 16" rear rim but the sizes you list 160/80 will be a slightly taller tire by 1 size --- and would work best --- the 180/60 --- will be taller and wider ( note overall height might be close to the 150/80 because as you go wider the height changes  a little to so technically you have gone down two heights due to the width but up two in Height)... confused-- its a ratio thing-- its not exact.  Putting it another way a 180-80 tire will have a slightly higher height than a 180/60

Bottomline---- if you go too wide it doesn't fit the rim properly and thus wont ride /wear properly.   If you really want to stick with Conti's my best choice would be 160-80.    But I would just go to the AVONs in the right size and switch out the front next time around to an AVON -- matched set achieved.

I'll check the clearance tonight. A 10mm diff is about 1/3" so hopefully there is enough room. Thanks for the info.

The "nominal" size is not necessarily a true indication of the actual size, however.....

If we assume that the numbers are accurate, the 160 will be 10mm wider than the 150, which means you need 5mm (less than 1/4" for those metrically challanged) additional clearance from the chain and/or brake stay.  It is also 8mm larger in radius, so the bike's ride height will be up by 8mm (~5/16" for the mc types).

Also, Michelin used to make a 160/80x16 that many including me have used on the rear of a stock wheeled FJ.  It worked just fine.

I had a 160/80 16 on when i got my 86 put on by the p.o.  worked fine as far as clearance went..had to get new treads last week myself... the back was about to self destruct!!!

I'm running a Avon Venom 160/80 16 on my 84 it barely clears and had to notch out the chainguard. but works well and is a nice tire for this bike.                      Charley.
