4th gear redline......

Had to run over to the VA Hospital yesterday for an x-ray.  It is about an hour and 1/2 ride, one way,  with very straight roads with long sweepers that are hardly even corners at 75 mph.   Anyways, after running up in the triple digits a few times I got this notion to find out just what speed the bike would hit at redline in 4th gear.  So, if you have never done this yourself, or you have and wonder what other FJ's run out at the same rpm. I will share my experience with you.  In 4th gear, with 17 and 40 sprocket set up, my bike hit just past 145 mph. at  9500 rpm.  So, I would say it would be an honest 135 mph.  Obviously a bit higher if you continued to the revlimiter, and I would say and honest 150+ if you ran it out in 5th gear.  I had my trunk bag on and the wind buffet gets pretty bad after 145 mph with it on, so I didn't continure on in 5th.

Oh, and yes, from 6 grand, wide open, to redline in 4th gear would be a Kookalloo Moment.  :wacko3:

What altitude did you run at?  Curious as always.  Last time I took my hotrod down low, (PHX) I got about 10 extra feet of rubber on the ground and nasty detonation after it got hot.

I have little experience with M/C CV carbs other than the plugs usually look nice golden brown.  That means lean everywhere else.  I hope to ride sea level by spring.  Can't wait to see what it will do, but would rather rejet before I leave.

It could happen, but I slow down when coming up on vehicles, and here in North Florida, BFE (beautiful Florida everglades), we have straight roads with nothing but pine trees on either side of the road.  So, if there are no cars on the side of the road it is clear sailing.  It also makes for great flat out runs because the trees keep the wind off you.  The hard part is forcing yourself to run the speed limit, which you can see I have a difficult time of doing.  Not something I am proud of and at my age I know better, but it is an issue for me just the same.  I do good most of the time, but when you can look miles ahead, and it is just you and the road, it is very hard not to twist the throttle.

Aw, shucks, Phil, I was just yankin' your chain!

I envy you your roads that are that empty!

I lived In Ft Lauderdale twenty years ago and I still remember Thursday night meetings at Holiday Isle Park and the high sppeed runs through the Everglades, good fun.
