So through a series of craziness and somewhat poor decisions Ive managed to get my hands on two 1988 FJ1200s that are now sitting in my garage.

The first one failed the safety check here in Ontario and I had wanted the second one I got so I just threw caution into the wind and grabbed it.

On the 450 km ride home with it the speedo cable broke, so first order of business was harvesting the working one from the first bike. Hoping that this second one will pass safety when I take it in tomorrow.

I was thinking of doing some cheap fixes to the first bike and reselling it but the more I think about it I might keep it for spare parts. It has two nearly new metzler lasertec tires on it, new battery and should I need them all sorts of engine parts. Best I figure I can sell it for is 800-1000 and I'm betting the parts themselves are worth more than that.

Anyway, long story but I've finally joined the club :)

My first order mods list are going to be the spin on oil filter, LED backlit dash, LED brake lights, a new headlamp and more than likely the air pods. I want to keep the changes minimal and functional.

Edit: Looks like this should be in the Introductions forum... if a mod could move it? :)

Welcome Chauncey, got it moved for over for you...no problem.

Don't forget to ditch those those 26 year old rubber brake lines!

Fix one bike up ASAP so you can enjoy the summer riding season, then take your time with the other one.
Hunt eBay, look for deals, and as you can afford it, restore the second FJ.
Personally, I hate to see any FJ parted out, but that's just me. I admire bikers who restore bikes.

Again welcome. Let us know how we can help you...... Cheers. Pat

I had the thought to restore it as well... Ill have to see where I am with time and money. The second bike should be ready to go, everything feels good so as long as the safety mechanic is having an ok day I should be clear.

Maybe later this season or this winter ill do some plastic repair on the fairings. That is where most of the issue is with both bikes. The second could use valve adjustment and probably carb cleaning but neither feel pressing right now. I could be totally wrong though.

No half measures....Always check your valves, especially on a recently purchased bike.
Remember: A tight valve on a cold engine is a open valve on a hot engine, and that condition *will* burn a valve and/or valve seat....and trust me, you do not want that.

If your carbs are clean, good for you, but I would be surprised if they were.
Flush out the tank, change your fuel filter and synchronize the carbs.

Hey Chauncey,

An 88! great choice.

Welcome to the club!

There's most of the riding season left ..... A good safety and the usual fixes, and you are ready to rock.

Good Times!   :drinks:
