Carbie install

Hahaha I just saw the post from Tex with the exact same problem...I'll give Pat's trick a try.

Well I got my shiney overhauled carbs back from RPM yesterday and went about installing them last night. Didn't get too far as one of the two throttle cables is a real sob to hook up. There's hardly any room to get at it but I did manage to get the cable end in the hole with a pair of needle nose pliers and a screw driver but it seems you have to stretch the cable to get it into the assy. Now I know you shouldn't be stretching cables to make them fit so I'm hoping there's a trick or two to getting this thing on. I tired with the cable bracket attached to the carb body and loose. After an hour futzing with it I gave up.  :dash1:  It's the cable that goes over the top side of the throttle assy.

This isn't to much help but I always install the carb side cables on the carbs before I put them back on.  As a triva note at the slider box area the 2 cables there are color coded. The cable ends,  one is silver and one is black. They should match up. Black / Black, Silver / Silver.  At least if the cables are stock.
And it is hard to read but the top cover plate of  slider box is marked which way to install it.

That's an enormous amount of help because that's exactly what you do, fit the cables before you re mount the carbs, piece of cake.
They are a fair bastard to fit in situ as you've discovered.

Thanks guys, I had the carbs off but couldn't manage to get the one cable back on. I'll keep at it tonite.  :diablo:

On another note, I didn't think to get the oil for my new pods. Do any of the chain parts stores carry the spray oil? I don't want to order it and wait another week to get back on the road... thanks

George, if I read this right, the OP (magge) has a '92 with no slider box.

Follow Noel's advice, always put the cables on before you mount the carbs. This allows you to twist and turn the carbs as you need for cable reassembly.
Rotate the linkage to open the throttle plates, then find a way to hold the throttle plates open allowing you both hands to fuss with putting the cable barrels in the slots.
I've put the wrong cables on the linkage before, only to have to start all over... so before I start the cable reassembly I hold the carbs in place and rotate the throttle grip so I can see clearly which cable is the pull and which is the push...the pull always goes on the linkage closest to the engine.

It is a pain. Keep at it...

Went at it again last nite using Noel's tips. Man what a pain! I came so close a bunch of times but there just isn't much room. After an hour or so it finally went in. It was the cable going over the top of the throttle assy. The other cable went on without a hassle. Now its oiling up the pods tomorrow and shes back on the road.  :greeting:

Did you have the throttle wide open?, it shouldn't be that difficult.

Yeah I had a screwdriver holding the throttles open but it was mostly my inexperience causing the problems. If I had to do it again it would be much easier. One thing I noticed is the throttle doesn't snap closed. It closes but it seems slow at the end. Don't know if this will be an issue but I thought it should close more forcefully, kind of snap shut.

Yes, it should snap shut, and yes it will be an issue.

As far as the cable goes, the second, and each subsequent time round is always easier, helps if you hold your tongue the right way too.

Is it a cable adjustment or are the slides sticking or..?

Yeah, I held my tongue and counted to 10 more than once... :shout:

The vacuum slides move independently based on air velocity (from opening/closing throttle plates)

Those throttle plates should fully open then snap close.....if not you have a hang up somewhere.
It goes without saying, but...do not ride the bike in this condition.

Gave the cable a bit of slack and that seems to be working. Oiled up the pods and now I'm trying to clean the boots. So far nothing is working they just slide off the carbs. Tried alcohol, thinner and a couple of grease cutting cleaners.   :ireful:

Clean the outside circumference on the carb mouth, the inside of the Uni's and do not over tighten the clamps.
Just a snug fit.
Be sure to use the correct foam filter oil on the UniPods, and specifically not the filter oil you use on paper (K&N) filters.
There is a difference.

First off I want to say thanks for the good advice from everyone. My first foray into FJ maintenance was a test of my patience but all has worked out well thanks to you guys. I cleaned the Uni's with brake cleaner this morning which took care of the excess oil pretty well and I didn't tighten the clamps so they actually stayed put. Had to adjust the idle as it was idling just about 100 rpm. Checked everything over, no more fuel leaks, Uni's in place so off I went on a shakedown ride. A hundred miles later and she is running saweeeet!! Better throttle response, mileage appears to be a bit better, I'll confirm on my next fill up, and the new induction sound is cool. I can hear the engine revving better which helps judging shift points. Really pleased...stopped a few times on the road to check on everything and no problems found. Got home and put on my old set of TourMaster soft bags for the 1st time. Now I'm ready for some summer touring and camping miles. So thanks again and a special thanks to Robert at RPM refurbing the carbs. He emailed and called me to made sure he had the scoop on what they needed to for jetting based on my riding style and the even the weather in the northeast. He went the extra mile plus. great service. So here she is new Powerbronze screen ready to hit the road. Well almost, new braided line are next on the moditus list.

Good report ! Have fun riding her now. Some advice on the uni-pods I wouldn't use brake clean on them. I would just use some gas. Someone else might have more suggestions. Your bike looks good. Good feeling to know you can fix your own bike... Even if you have someone else work on it you will know what is right or wrong. Have a good and safe riding season.  Moditus can wait till the snow flys  :good2:
