RPM Oil Cooler, Fumoto Drain

So today I finally installed a bunch of mods on my 89 FJ.....RPM Oil Cooler and spin-off filter adapter, new throttle cables, new grips, and Fumoto Oil drain valve. I have 4-1 Vance and Hines exhaust that sounds incredible, but changing the oil is a pain in the ass. The Fumoto plug will hopefully make it easier, but it is almost unreachable as the stock plug. We shall see in about 3k miles.....Filled the case with Valvoline 20-50w. Putted around for awhile, double checked for leaks and drips, then did a bit of hard riding....also stop and go traffic that I got stuck in today. Bike seems to run cooler, it was 85 in Denver today, and I have had problems with hot-running engine previously...i.e. smoke pouring off the motor.

Is it my imagination of is she running stonger??? New cables def helped with the throttle response, the old ones were probable original and stretched to shit...Also recently shot the engine with flat black bbq paint, which help up well on my 1990 ninja with no peeling or flaking at all. Lemme see...I want shorty levers but can't seems to find any that fit an 89 FJ. Have bought ones on ebay the were supposed to fit but didnt.  Could use some info on availibility if anyone knows...

New rear tire next week - Pirelli sport Demon in 150 80 16...Anybody have experience with those?

Don´t fit those. Horrible tyres with a carcass that don´t support the FJ weigh and flex dangerously all around

As a note, I have been running the Pirelli Sport Demons, and like them. It's a matter of your riding style, and many variables, when it comes to tires. I can attest to their performance in hard rain, as I rode a few hours in it a couple of weeks ago. Good tires in that condition.

I´ve tested those Pirellis in a variety of FJs because Pirelli are cheap in Spain and it looks like everyone that sell an FJ fit those tyres to say "near new tyres". Horrible!. No way. More important: even the owners of that bikes say those are horrible when they start to get used of their bikes

  I've been running my '85 on Sport Demons, back and front and I have to say that in wet or dry, solo or two up, highway or twisty roads, (The Dragon, twice, a few weeks ago!!), these tires have held up just fine. I have absolutely no complaints about them

I agree with tiger.. I run the sport demon on mine front and back and I have no issues with them at all.. I have been rollin around on some shitty roads too.. so far they have they have held up great with good traction and normal wear..

I am really curious how well that oil cooler works. I get stuck in traffic daily with the heat the way it is I am kinda stressin over how hot she is getting..

So far the oil cooler seems to be working. I was stuck in downtown traffic for 30 minutes, stop n go...The temp here in Denver was about 85. Under the same circumstances pre-cooler, the motor would smoke and I had a noticable loss of power. The heat was still radiating off the engine, especially on my inside right thigh, no smoke, no power loss. In fact the cooler oil may help with compression (?), and I swear I'm getting more power out of her....some of it is due to the new throttle cables, I couldnt open it up all the way before. In my opinion, well worth the money. I'm not rolling in dough, it was an investment but well worth it. Also easy to install. Basically bolts right on, two holes needed to be drilled in the brackets supplied. Do it man. I feel like a shill for RPM, buy I would also recommend the spin off filter adapter in chrome... Looks great, and oil changes will be easier. Regards, Matt

+1 for the Sport Demons...Ran every sort of road in every sort of weather and they were a real confidence builder.  I was rolling at just a tick over 900 pounds with all my camping gear and they lasted 5,500 miles.  There was just enough rubber left to run the Dragon at a spirited clip and I replaced them with *very* high mileage tires to finish out the rest of the trip.

What is a Fumoto drain? Is this basically a shorter than stock plug. I changed my oil yesterday and there is no way to do it without removing my Yoshimura header due to the length of the stock drain plug...believe me I tried!                                                                                                                                      Charley

Check eBay for fumoto ez drain valve....the 14 x 1.5 mm fits in place of stock drain plug. It has a valve that, depending  on the clearance of your pipes, may allow you to drain oil without tools. And hopefully without removing exhaust. I have  Vance and Hines 4 into 1, I can reach drain Plug, flip the lever and drain oil. Good luck

Alf  -  Any more information on the Avon Storm 3D X-M?  I decided to order some to replace my worn out Dunlop Sportmax Touring front and rear tires. - for my FJ1200 1989 with OEM wheels.  Looking forward to trying out the Avons - Did you get to test them out yet?
