Petcock seal

I've been trying to figure out what people were talking about when they mention safety wiring the petcock.  Now I know.  Mine came apart while I was trying to reattach the fuel line. 

In another thread I saw posted an indication that the petcock seal is 5mm id x 2mm cs.  I have seals that size, and I don't see how they work.  The male part of the petcock with the seal groove is 10mm O.D. 



So I'm thinking maybe I just need to stretch it on there, which I did, and it split. 



I tried a 7mm id x 2mm cs o-ring, but it's not even close to fitting in the female part of the petcock.  The cross section of the seal is just too thick.



The two pieces are fairly tight without the seal in place.  When I tried to put the pieces together with the seal, it just got pushed down to the base.



So what's the secret to making this fit?  Are we sure this seal is supposed to be 5mm x 2mm?

That joint was a press fit, now it is too loose. You could reinstall it  :negative: with a gas proof adhesive and safety wire. You would need to get the angle correct as well. Or you could take the safe method  :good2: and get a new one from Randy at RPM, he pre-wires them for you. If you chose to get new then consider the 84/85 petcock. It is less expensive and has a Prime position. The down side is you lose the electricky reserve function. I religiously check my miles so I always have a good feel for needing to fill up. Both still have the vacuum shutoff feature so fuel does not flow if the engine is off. Now I have a spare OEM switch for accessories when I want one.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

I suppose that's a good news/bad news answer.  Bad news, I broke it.  Good news...just glue it together.

I used green loctite and cable tied it in place,worked fine.I pull the fuel pipe at the T for the carb now which leaves the joint at the tap in place.
