will 1100 gauges work in my 1200?

none of the gauges work right in my 86 1200. speedo bounces around, fuel gauge bounces but is now stuck on the other side of the E needle and the tach some times goes down a bit when you give her a pull before coming up. some times not at what i feel is actual acceleration. my father bought a cluster off of ebay that came off a 1100 and i was wondering if it would be possible to just swap out the internals.

a.graham,

I do not know if the older gauges will work on the 1986.

Most likely, the speedometer needle bounces around because the speedometer cable core needs lubrication.  I doubt that any new speedometer (gauge) will fix that problem.  Put the right size "square drive" Apex bit into a reversible drill-motor, and you can test the speedometer gauge without the cable.  If the speedometer reads smoothly using the drill, just slide the cable core out of the speedometer cable, and use any good grease (except Lithium) to lube the core.  It may be that you need a new speedometer cable, but usually cable lubrication will fix an erratic speedometer.

The fuel and tachometer gauges may be the victims of a dirty ground.  You should unscrew and clean the instrument grounding first (and manually put the fuel needle back into the normal range), before you try gauges which may or may not work on your bike.  Hope that helps.

The 88-93 fuel gage has the digital clock in it.  And I think the speedo has a different face. As far as changing the whole thing out I know the 88-93's have a different lens cover so they might be slightly different in shape.  That's about all the information I can add.
If you buy another used cluster try to get one with a good lens cover, that way you will have an extra or sell one to help defray some of your cost. There is a reasonable demand for the 84-87  lens.

I got an 1100 speedo to work, had to swap a few things around. Now my FJ has low miles...

Pat,

White lithium grease and black moly greases are often incompatible.  They quickly form a sandy abrasive substance that does not work as grease, but more like grit.  Just clean everything with a de-greaser, followed by brake cleaner, and then choose either type of grease, but do not mix them.  White lithium grease penetrates better, but it is for light duty such as bicycle chains and car doors (non-staining).  Google can find extensive grease compatibility charts, but you would have to know what was there first (by chemistry), so it's just simpler to say, "do not mix them."

Uh, you'll go blind doing that.

You should be able to get the fuel needle back around by waving a rare earth magnet over top of the needle.  It might take a few tries but it will come back around.

Wheel bearing grease has always been the lubricant of choice for speedo cables because it suits the application and is widely available, that is, most people already have some.
