I just received a gear indicator that I ordered in April. I don't think I will install it in my FJ, but my 50cc bike which has no Neutral light and frustrating trying to find neutral.

Lotsokids,

How does the sending unit for that gadget operate?  Got a picture?

Well, the price is certainly reasonable enough. it said in the product specifics that it uses 2 sensor modules, but I didn't see any other details.  I'm thinking that might be a good device to add, I'll bet I looked for 6th gear a hundred times yesterday. It's also making me reconsider the 42 tooth rear sprocket I ordered for the GSXR wheel. Maybe that one and an 18 tooth countershaft sprocket.....

It's a magnet on a strip of metal attached to the shift lever and two switches. Shift up, it  closes the upper switch and increments display. Shift down, it closes the lower switch and decrements.

I don't think this will actually help you find neutral - it has nothing to do with position of things inside the transmission.

Mark, how big is the exterior of the display?  This looks interesting.  They also have a unit with Red LEDs.

I believe it will. It should indicated when I'm in 2nd gear, then 1/2 step down is neutral. The problem is when I don't know if I'm in 2nd or 3rd.

On the FJ, and a whole bunch of other Yamahas (and maybe other bikes) it's possible to modify the neutral switch to be a gear indicator. I'll see if I can find a link for that.

No need, there is already one available...

Also, a little birdie tells me there might at least one other style of digital gear indicator in the works for the FJ as well.

That's a nice little indicator and at a reasonable price.  I wonder if it'd be worth gutting it and repurposing it for nefarious means.

I played with google a minute and must say, that's a really nasty thing to try to search for, but I managed to find instructions for the installation of a unit that does what you describe, here (google cached version here, as it was a bit finicky about loading properly).

He doesn't show real well how he does the modification (for obvious reasons), but I'm guessing he's adding extra places to the triangular plastic bit to read when the neutral pin moves.  The main site appears to be down, but some googlefu yields this link which doesn't give any useful info. I didn't try further digging though (easiest to just mirror the site probably and dig manually).

I've seen similar mods done to suzuki's, for example this but they have provisions for each gear to be read by the ECU, so they set it to read 1N23455 to defeat the top speed limiter.

Edit:  Damnit, Randy has everything these days!
