Hi all,
It's been ages, but I'm still doing well.  I've had some minor health issues recently but recovered well from hernia surgery and tweaked knee, and got blood pressure under control, old age sucks.  Anyway, I uncovered the old FJ that has been sitting for probably 7 years and am trying to fix it up, as well as my hawks which have been working somewhat the last couple years.  Anyway, I never did get a reservoir adapter mount, actually did but someone stole the black anodized parts at work, long story, still need to brace the R1 reservoir and wondered if someone could send me pics, Chirs P, Henry, anyone?  May try to make my own mount with my dad's machine shop.  Thanks and hope all is well!

Keith,

Good to see you back!

Are you still an honest-to-God rocket scientist?

Are you still making awesome beer?
Can we have some?

Here's a rough idea of what you need...

Not sure if this is helpful...I modified the original bracket and then used two of the typical clamps from a M/C to bolt it on.

Jon makes nice stuff...

FJ Monkey also made some nice ones.  I have one for the '90, but haven't installed it yet.

Seeing as how this style of master cylinder has became a current topic again, I just have to ask, without passing judgment either way, is why don't more people use the FZ1 master cylinder, which is a direct bolt on replacement, which goes on without the need for custom made parts?

I can only guess that the people that choose this style like the looks/ function, easily removable lid?
I'll be honest, I just have never understood this!

I have nothing against custom parts, but if there is a part that does what I'm looking for without the added parts to make it work, then that is the way I would go, in this case.

Hi, Keith I am one of the newer guys hanging around here. Just want to introduce myself  :good2:  Good info on the bracket from Randy. And glad to hear you are working on the FJ.

Not that it answers any questions but in response to Leon's post.  Right now I am just using the stock FJ M/C with the blue dots. But I if install something else it would be the FZ1 or a GL1800 unit.  Nothing wrong with the cup but I do think it is another plastic part and hose to break or leak fluid.  I see a lot of them on e bay with the cup fitting snapped off..... But they are all good and function fine from reading other posts.  I don't use DOT 5 but if I had a cup I would consider it. Don't need nasty brake fluid spilling on the tank or fairing side panel.

Hey Keith, long time no hear..  When I saw "deathblosom", I thought what are the odds someone else chose that name...

Anyway.. if you don't require custom fancy-ness and just want to secure your reservoir, a generic angle/shelf bracket from Lowes will work and look decent for about 49 cents.

Good question Leaon...in my case I am using it because the seals went out of the FJ one and I two of these when I did the YZF 600 mod to my other 92.  We first used it with the standard 92 calipers.  It is 14mm and is not a "radial" MC.  It did "seem" to give better feel and it has an adjustable lever, and I was able to get new (cheap) levers that I thought looked good..  It does have a very large, ugly, cup.

I did learn you need to be careful with aftermarket levers, (at least in combination with the R1 radial front end), the MC piston does not release fully.  Not immediate, but eventually (after about 1/8 mile) the front brakes began to gradually lock up, to the point where the wheel is pretty much locked.  Putting the oem lever back on solved the problem.  Also documented on R1 forums.

The FZ1 master cylinder also comes with an adjustable lever.

Another feature of the FZ-1 master benefits the '84/'85 models.
It is drilled and threaded for the bar mounted mirrors. As is the FJR clutch master cylinder.

The "pisscup' masters really do not offer any advantages over any other 14mm oem master used with the blue dots other than the adjustable levers and the fact that they are common as dirt, therefore cheap. In some cases they are easier to package but there is no performance advantage. I now run a 16mm radial brembo from a 05+ R1/R6 with my blue dots on the YZF and love it. Feel is vastly improved over the 14mm YZF part, so much so not only can I feel exactly what the front wheel is doing, I ca probably tell you what pit the gravel in the pavement came from..... :hi:

As far as the Jon Cain bracket... I will see the man himself this weekend as he is stopping by to pick up a few new project bikes. I will ask him if he has a set made up or can run off a few.

On my '89, it was mostly because the FZ1 was still very new to the market, and the squids had already been throwing down R1s for a few years.  R1 salvage parts were a lot more affordable at the time.

At this point, it matches the YZF750 clutch master nicely.
And they both show off the purtty DOT5, of course.

Lots of folks that like the stock look have been using FZ1 master cylinders for some time now.

I like a clean simple look..

Thanks Randy, I think your reply is the most direct and logical answer to my question.
