Pickup Coil Cover tarnished

Here is the tarnished pick up coil cover on my 1989 FJ.  I don't know what it is made of to know how to polish.  Any tips you can share would be appreciated.

Yep, remove the cover, take some lacquer thinner or acetone and strip off the old coating and put her on the polisher..... You might have to dress it up some with 1000 - 1500 grit wet or dry before polishing.

Yep, what George said.....that crusty old clear is be stubborn to get off....I use water soluble paint stripper.
It will bubble that old clear coat off in a hurry. Obviously, take the cover off to do this.
Re: Progressive wet sanding, if you have scratches and/or want a mirror finish, that's what to do, however, if you don't mind the machine finish (lines in the aluminum) just 2 buffs with Simichrome should do it.

Thanks Scott, No I didn't clear any of the parts I polished.  I don't think clear will hold up very good and what ever sticks will probably turn yellow in time.  I just live with the fact that I need to keep it polished up.  I might try some wax just to seal it.  Except on the headers. They turn golden pretty quick.

If it was a work bike or it had to be parked or stored outside I would think more about finding a coating.  Perhaps a clear powder coat or something similar. There is a product called AFC 50 that our fellow FJ riders over in the UK and Europe use that they swear by for corrosion resistance but I haven't tried it myself.  The Brits know a lot about corrosion..........

I think Aircraft Spruce sell's the stuff here. Something to think about anyhow.

George, search acrylic clear powder coating. Many polished automotive wheels now have this coating. Polish the hell out of it, clear coat it, then just wash it.... Oh yea....

George, this is just VHT high temp clear coat after 80,000kms. Looks as good as the day I did it. I don't think it would last long on the headers though.



I went for a satin / brushed finish, more like the original. Once cleaned up, I rubbed fine W&D uniformly in one direction to get the finish.
I sprayed the "yamaha" black and redefined the edges with W&D.
