I rememberer these.
At least this kit has the turbo in the correct location, down low in front of the engine, in the air stream. I remember some aftermarket kits having the turbo located under the seat behind the engine...
Can you say mmmmmm toasty?
Yes, I know Yamaha used the under seat turbo location on their '83 Seca but they used a small turbo and had some extensive heat shielding.
Interesting that Honda CX and Yamaha XJ650 Seca did not stay on the market for long. Dealers hated them.
Those little Mikuni carbs used with forced induction were a pain to deal with.
Kawasaki had the right idea with fuel injection on the 750 ZX turbo model. The best of the bunch.

Regardless, for a street bike, no way I would own a turbo on a engine with carbs....

Mr. Bean's friend who had the turbo 'Busa at Gunnison....that looked interesting.

Pat - I think you'll find most all these draw thru turbos mount under the seat   That long pipe above the header and a bit to the left mounts to the collector and routes the exhaust around the base of the cylinder to the turbo. 

Mr Turbo still builds draw thru kits for Kaws and Suzis - here's a nice setup with more of a sidewinder style header.  Mr Turbo used to do an FJ kit, but no more - they never updated the jigs for the FJ kit when they had to change exhaust pipe material (larger diameter tube IIRC) and no longer produce the kit 

All Pat needs to do to really wake up his 1349 is replace those stock carbs - maybe drop $2400 plus on a set of Mikuni TMRs?!  After all, all the other carbs out there are a compromise of sticking slides, no choke, no longer produced, etc!

Chris, thanks for pointing that out on the turbo kit, and yep, TMR's would be my first choice.
I've always wondered if the multi jet nozzle (MJN) feature on the top line Yoshurmia TMR would be worth the additional money, or just run the standard TMRs.

Regardless, I think I'll stay with the CV36's for now. I know I lose power on the top end, but the current 95+ft/lbs of torque is plenty to keep me occupied.

The drawthrough system was the hallmark of the old Rayjay turbo setups, yes?

Why on earth would you want a chromed header?  I've seen too many horror stories of headers cracking welds and other problems of that sort.  Also would be lovely to know more about the thing, like what type and size of turbo is included.

I'd wonder if the turbo mounts high enough that you can adequately drain the oil from it without needing a scavenge pump.

I think I'm with Pat though.  Imagine the nightmare of work to swap jets around while trying to get the fueling close!  It'd be like having to pull a big convoluted airbox, plus having to worry about boost leaks, atop the usual pulling of the rack and swapping brass.

I read somewhere, in a auto performance book I guess, that in order to get longevity out of a turbo'd engine, the compression ratio should be dropged to 8:1. True or false on bike engines?

Several factors, so to name 5:
1) the amount of boost you run, and
2) the advance of your ignition timing
3) how much fuel you can reliably deliver, and
4) what type of fuel you use and,
5) intake air temp. (Intercooler or not)

Generally our 10.5-1 compression on the FJ is too high for pump gas, so yea, different pistons would be needed for a lower compression. The rods should also be upgraded. Even still, no way I would even consider a turbo on a bike that did not have fuel injection.

8-1 is proven reliable on street Miatas with ~10psi boost, pump gas, fuel injection and careful  dyno tuning via a programmable ECU.
9.5-10.5-1 works ok on the higher octane E-85 as long as your injectors and pump can flow the ~40% more fuel needed from the ethanol.

Yah looks like I have next winters project time all used up.
I live about 40 miles from a fellow that runs a Turbo rx1 (snowmobile)  on asphalt. 1/4  last time I talked to him, he had run 7.86 I think with his old motor. His new one was 628hp.don't know. How he did with that one.
But he doesn't like fuel injection. He says carbs are much easier and cheaper. I've watched a friend running a mellower version of one of his carb Turbo motors(about 380hp) run 146mph in 600ft on ice last I talked too him he had 2years and 46 runs without taking it apart.
I figured I'd get it all set up and take it too him for startup and tune

Shows how far we've come. As a kid in the early '60s that's what the top fuel rails were running...

On a snowmobile? ...on asphalt? That's wild... I would like to know more...

It runs a trac that has no paddles basically a giant slick. And wheels that look like inline skates instead of skis.  At the time he had the world record..  I remember watching the video and you could hear it breaking loose and him backing off repeatedly at the top of the 1/4. It's been several years but I think it was 175+miles an hour. With rollerblades for steering. Crazy
What's more impressive to me is my friend (average Joe)  doing 146mph in 600ft on ice. Sleds are crazy fast
No not for the 1350. was thinking I might run the strip a few times wtith the 87 since Wisconsin won't let me put it back on the street.
Maybe stick it in the 89 with the givis on just to smoke a few hayabusas with an antique with luggage on it

Just looked snowmobile 1/4 mile world record. Someone else did 7.59. Also on a Yamaha.

That's absolutely wild, a snowmobile on asphalt. Amazing that the track can hold together with that abuse.

Dan, anticipating the turbo install, do you have a preliminary plan on what you need to do to the engine?

How's the Hank Scott bike running? Check your valves sooner rather than later....new engines need that.

No plan other than making a drag bike? Toy out of the crashed 87.
Haven't got it in the bike yet doing a bunch of other mods to the 86 and putting a gsxr front on the 89. It's really warm here today 14deg.got a long time before any chance to ride.

Yah I asked Hank about valve adjustment. And he said after 2000 miles. Seemed kinda long to me.

I thought I would ask Randy for break in suggestions. He's probably better acquainted with the motors being in a bike.
