Exhaust cylinder bolts

I am in the process of replacing my exhaust downpipes and therefore have to take off the bolts/nuts that fix them to the cylinder. I fear the bolt will break and have soaked the nut with penetrating oil for two weeks. Anyone have experience how hard these bolts on the FJ1100(85) is to get off without breaking?

I don't know why you would be particularly worried about breaking them off, but after the treatment you have given them they should just about come off with your fingers. They are generally not very tight anyway as the gaskets behind them tend to compress a bit. They do get a bit rusty though but the soaking you have given them should take care of that as well.

Providing you use the correct size socket I don't imagine you will have a problem.

Just an add on to the previous post. If for some reason they feel like they are offering more resistance than they should, the last thing you want to do is persist. There are tips and tricks for loosening them.
I still think with the soaking you have given them they will come off easily unless someone previous has done them up stupid tight and periodically tightened them.

If you feel they require more than a reasonable amount of force get back to us. It is much easier to try a different approach than deal with a broken stud.

No, it should not break (famous last words)
Soaking the threads should have done it but, even still, before the frozen bolt will break the stud, the stud itself will back out of the aluminum head.

A impact driver may help.

Yeah, I was terrified of the end results when I went to remove my header nuts too.
I also soaked them, (they looked terrible), and guess what? All seven came off without a problem! (Number 8 unscrewed it's exhaust stud instead of the nut.)
I replaced the nuts with new from Randy, using anti-seize as well. When I next replace my headers with refurbished ones, it should be a cakewalk!
Take a deep breath, and go. It should work out fine. :empathy3:

Thanks for the answers. I was thinking of heating them prior to even start the unscrew process, but based on the good response, I will give it a try.

I have a good set of tools, so there should not be an issue with the equipment. The FJ have been in mine since 89 and it is in good condition, however the exhaust mufflers is now reached end of life.

Anyone know someone that have good set new stainless mufflers for sale?
Again, thanks for the good support.

Um, we're all waiting for Randy's exhaust. It should be out any day now...
He's been working on it for a while, and the at the last update it was almost finished, but I haven't heard anything recently.

Randy???   (I know you're leaving for AU in a bit, :drinks:, but any news?) (popcorn)

Well, for as much as I want it to be ready as no one has waited longer than I have...

I am short by just this much...

I will be welding this up and sending it back as we cant seem to get the header to fit by just changing lengths and trying again& again & again & again...

The CNC bender is great, but sometimes you just have to fab by cutting & welding.

It will be heading back to the manufacturer before I leave for down under and they assure me that the one made from this modified tube will be here for me to fit upon my return.

I usually give stuck bolt a sharp tap with a hammer before attempting to loosen them.  Not hard enough to break anything but perhaps enough to break some stuck rust etc.  An impact driver does this anyway but it can be a fairly imprecise tool.

Good luck,
