If u change petcocks, how do you then activate reserve? I haven't even looked at the petcock On the bike. Must have a manual knob or on and off if I had to guess

The reserve function is lost. It has 2 positions, ON and PRI. In the ON position it is off until the engine is pulling vacuum, then it flows fuel. In the PRI position fuel flow is wide open, good for filling the carbs after some carb work. I don't see any value in the reserve function. In all the years I have been riding I have used the reserve function once. It was my first bike, a long trip and new rider (me). Ever since then, I have been a hawk with the trip meter and always know how much fuel (range remaining) I have. So the fuel gauge is also a waste of space in the FJ dash. Don't get me wrong, I don't knock anyone that likes that stuff, I just don't need it and like what I have always been doing.

+1  :good2:  I am with you... At around 150 miles I start setting up for a fuel stop. Old habits.  For a reserve I would much rather have a manual valve that is accessible..

When was the last time anyone owned a car with a reserve switch? They ditched them with the introduction of fuel gauges. It is nothing more than a hangover from pre fuel gauge, or even trip meter days on bikes, with an extended overlap, just like kick starters.

Vacuum petcocks and associated fuelling issues are a very regular topic here. While there is nothing wrong with one in good order, the low head pressure and poor filtration of the gravity feed that supplies them creates more issues than the tap itself.

A pressurised, well filtered fuel delivery is far more reliable. You might expect one pump failure in the life of the bike and that's it.

One day, when sanctioned by the powers that be, it will become a common mod, just like it is on old cars. It's just a matter of how the group thinks. On old gravity fed cars it's one of the first things you do, and they generally have more head pressure and solid fuel lines.

So I took her to work today and got it running with a bit of a boost. Gave it a quick layer of degreaser and hosed her down. During lunch I took it for a test drive. Hopes good but runes very rough just off idle. Dad was always complaining if that but insisted on adding some kind of fuel treatment to bandaid the problem. So... After work u pulled the carbs. Take a look at the air filter! Also like to admit that it took me all of 15 minutes for my first fj carb pull. LOVE the ability to separate the throttle cables in half!

Air filters have to get very dirty before noticeably affecting running but that one looks like it's well past that stage.

Tell me about it! I'm hoping to get this all cleaned up and back together so I can ride it while I tear down the b12. That's overdue for a valve adjustment and also blew a fork seal last year. While the forks apart I'm going to swap in some race tech springs and gold valves.

Uh oh.... Looks like you pulled the elbow off the petcock.

You had best clean it up, seal it and safety wire it back on.  Search the site for wiring petcock.  There have been fires from this.

one question i do have is how on earth do you get get the intake boots between the box and carb ALL the way back on. i cannot for the life of me do it. #3 faught me all day long and had me pulling my hair out. is there a trick?

Best trick is to get rid of the air box and install UniPods...... Don't you love a smart ass...

I saw a post here using a scissor jack and some 2x4. Slow, firm, even, pressure and the carb bank pops back on. Very clever.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Carbs went Into the engine great, I lubed the boots with dielectric grease. But the issue I have is the the boots between the air filter and carbs. It's like they just arnt quite long enough
