Intro from Geelong, Vic, and a question or two

Hi,
My name is Dave and I live in Geelong. Vic.

Thought I'd sign up so I can ask a question or two. So far I have found some great links and threads in here  :good2:

So, I have a complete 84 FJ11 that I was going to use the engine for in a buggy. The project is cancelled. The FJ is in parts at the moment, but it's all here. The project has long fallen by the wayside and a mate suggested putting the FJ back together and get it back in the road.

Before I get carried away, I have to find out if it's possible to register this in my name if I don't have a receipt of sale or signed transfer paper for VicRoads. Any one know if it's possible?

I remember riding it before we stripped it and thinking this thing hammers wayyy better than the suspension and brakes can handle.  :bomb: Lol.

Thinking of street fighter styling it, as I'm not keen on the long front fairing look of it, and the bars feel wrong to me as I have a massive dirt biking background.

I have a couple of KTMs and other bikes, just thought this FJ could be too fun to waste just sitting around in bits  might do some light touring with friends that are into some of that too.

So two questions for now are:
Can I road rego this without a receipt or transfer paper? Can't remember the sellers name or addy from 10 years ago.
Can I start styling it different from standard FJ trim before I get a RWC for it?

Thanks in advance for any advice and info.

Dave.

Mates, watch out for these guys from Geelong...They make Norwegians squirm in fear!
:hi: Welcome Dave....Interestingly that FJ is having it`s thirtieth birthday party March 8th not far from your place....grab a trailer and bring some cake! http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=9788.0  :drinks:

Hi General.

Oh no. Are there 'Geelong stories' in here I need to find out about? Haha  (popcorn)

I doubt my bike will be rego'd by the 8th of March. Too many projects around here.

I can add some more interesting info to yours...

The build date on the compliance plate of this FJ is 03/84. So my bike has it's actual 30th birthday in March 2014. I can hear the Twilight Zone theme right now.

Welcome Dave, spent the first 35 years of my life in Geelong, love the place and visit often (from Melbourne)

I do believe you can register it in your name by filling out a declaration at the time.  A quick visit to Vicroads will tell you exactly what you need to do, but it can be done.

Not to discourage you from the excellent idea of putting the FJ back on the road but that buggy looks pretty well advanced with all the tricky stuff done. If the work to date is of a good standard you should get a good buck for it.

FJ's are about as simple as a motorbike gets, it shouldn't take long to throw it all back together.

Good luck

Hi and thanks Noel.

Yes, I like it here too. Know the area well after living in the region for 40+ years. The years fly by.

I will most probably keep the buggy under cover for a while yet. I bought an American brand 4x4 (insert tacky advertising campaign slogan here. Yes. That annoying one. Haha) recently, Grand Cherokee, and have been modifying that like mad, and waiting on a shipment from the US of a heap of suspension parts etc. so I have been getting my four wheel off road fix with that lately.

The buggy only needs to be reassembled now, brakes, floor panel, wiring, testing, some more suspension component work...etc etc. but really lost interest in it because of family issues that won't see it used much now anyways.

Thanks for the heads up with it being fairly easy to fill out the declaration. VicRoads is only 3 minutes from my joint.

The first thing I am doing right now on the FJ is paying attention to the brakes. Which are a bit sticky. Soaking the bits now. Rear calliper is the worst.

Arnie

Welcome to the list, Dave.
Sounds like you have the which end of the hammer sorted, but if you need a hand or advice, or the OEM manual, let me know.  Oh, if you need a rear caliper, I'm pretty sure I have a spare you can have.
I'm just up the road in Lethbridge, so not too far away.

BTW  I too think that buggy looks like it'd be a blast.

Cheers,

Hi Arnie.

Thanks all for the welcoming. Feels good in this forum.

Definitely be needing more advice as I go.

I'll def be needing a manual somehow, happy to pay for it.

I think the only brake part beyond repair may be the rear master. I think it's jammed solid now :( Will found out after tea tonight. As far as I can tell all three calipers are good enough to restore easily enough.

Damn. Forgot to ring VicRoads today. Too busy.

Good to see someone else close to Geelong. This could be fun times ahead.

Hoobz

I've had a win  :dance2:

Everything on the rear brake system turned out good. Stoked. Completely disassembled the master and caliper, rubbed/polished off any corrosion off the pistons and bores, cleaned off all the crud, lubed it all up internally with brake fluid, pumped it all a few times, lubed external moving parts with brake grease, reassembled, fitted to bike, new fluid, bled it...

She's working like a dream.

Front brakes are in better condition as far as any corrosion and gunk goes. Needs new pads though. I'll over haul front stoppers like the rear tomorrow night. Order some pads online.

Thinking about braided stainless lines all over, just have to make a list of priorities first. Then decide.

Arnie

Dave,

If you still have the original rubber brake lines on your bike - change them.  Service life is supposed to be 4years and they've been on there for 28 !  The braided SS lines are about the same price as OEMs or less.
Just do it.

Arnie

Hoobz

Arnie,

It still has rubber brake lines. But hey, what could possibly go wrong on a bike this big with this power and sketchy brakes?

A few mates have said they'd like to have a go of this when it's finished.

PM sent.

Cheers

THAT'S what could go wrong!

Hoobz

Just went and saw the RWC tester, asked a few timely questions as it turns out.

In Vic they have recently changed the testing and documentation system at VicRoads.

The testers now have to take pics of the bike they are testing and document it all digitally with VicRoads to compare with factory spec set up.

The bike has to be as factory spec in most regards.

No naked bike conversion allowed. Front fairing must stay on. Bummer.

Braided brake lines ok, but need to have plastic sheath (clear is ok) and have tag/ring/stamp showing Australian Standard compliance.

Tester did say...yadda yadda yadda...blah blah blah... he can't control what I do with the bike after he passes it.

Keep in mind, YMMV with different testers in Vic.

I can simply fill out a stat dec with regards to claiming ownership of the bike.

Now, I'm not familiar with R6 parts prices, but I'd guess that there's over $3K of damage to that bike, assuming that the frame and forks are not tweaked.
I could very well be wrong, but my guess would be on the low side.

This doesn't even consider the damage sustained by your mate (by either the crash or your anger)

Consider....
