No room for a third bike I presume? Because I would love to make it to Cali, I just can't justify the cost of gas there and back on my own.

Not everyone understands what a completely rational process this maintenance of a motorcycle is. They think it's some kind of a knack or some kind of affinity for machines in operation. They are right, but the knack is almost purely a process of reason.

Yep Cap'n....come hell or high water Ill be there. My Bike will be a trailer Queen running cross country, if I had the extra time I would make an epic trip out of it like you did but I just don't have the time.

Sometimes you just gotta cage it and trailer/truck the bike just to make a trip happen.  For me, time, comfort, and interest have always been the deciding factors.  If I don't have enough time to take an "Interesting" route to a destination, then I'd rather slab it down the interstate with the bike in the back of the truck, than die of boredom on the bike.  For me to slab it on the bike, I'd at least need some scenery to make it worth while.

On a side note, I may actually make it down to this years rally.  I'm just waiting to find out if a tentative Arizona trip (I've already committed to) is gonna conflict or not.

I plan on taking the high country route from SoCal to Willits. The ride up and over the Sierras is epic.

I totally agree with you sir.  Unfortunately in the past, I've been hit with the dilemma of only having a certain amount of time for a trip, and having to decide whether to spend more time getting to the destination, or spending more time at the destination.  I find that with my truck on the interstate, I can often travel more miles a day comfortably than I can on the bike.  Even though I can travel at a faster speed on the bike, I'm still limited by being only able to ride roughly 300-400 miles a day before I'm through, especially when riding in the heat (high 80's+).  Add to the fact that for me, most freeways are incredibly boring on a motorcycle, and thus slogging down one for 8+ hours quickly becomes utter torture.  Slogging the freeway is a subjective issue to be sure, and I certainly don't think ill of those who do.  It's just not for me.

To be clear, if I have the time, I always plan for the more interesting route.  In my case, interesting being defined as curvy and/or very scenic.  If I can make it down to Willits this year, I will definitely be riding the most interesting route down I can find.

Very nice!  I've done the 395 on the east side of the Sierra Nevadas quite a bit.  The route back from last year's WCR took me up over the 108 (Sonora to Bridgeport)  25% grades and JUST spectacular!

I agree with both of you...If you've got the time, finding an interesting route...or great scenery is the way to go.  I find that for myself, I want even more time than a twisty interesting route would seem to take.  If I get up into interesting areas, I might meet other riders who want to show me some other road I never even considered.  Maybe there's some sight that needs seeing.  Maybe the best place to camp for the night comes up as a beautiful spot next to a lake...but that means you only loged 250 miles that day...but I'm right here and shouldn't pass it up!!

If you have to log the interstates to just get there...it's no longer about the trip...it's about the destination and you might as well trailer it.  I can regularly knock out 800 miles a day in a car.  600 is the best I've done on the FJ on straight-line interstates and I was pretty worn out at the end of that.  Not enjoyable at all.  Add to that, I'm just eating up tires.  I was thinking about the Black Hills Rally...I would want the stickiest rubber up in that part of SD, but even just slabbing it all the way would eat up 3000 miles of expensive tires.  I may build myself a trailer.   :good2:

If your route takes you up the 101, HWY G16 is one of my favorite roads that connect the 101 to PCH.

I'm getting tips on California roads from a guy from KANSAS???   :rofl:  Well, one of the best road tips EVER was from that Australian, Klavdy...(route 20 from Fort Bragg to Willits) so you might be on to something!  I've only ever run that road from PCH to Carmel Valley...EXCELLENT Pinot Noir at Talbott's tasting room!!!  I'll have to run the rest of that and give you a report.  Thanks!!   :hi:
