Few FJ1100 questions

Hello all,
I am new here and I have a few questions that I could not answer using the search function.  I just bought a 1985 FJ1100 that is in excellent shape except for the fact that it was in storage for 4 years.  My questions are

On the petcock below the tank it reads "On" and "Pri".  I come from an off-road motocross background so I have only seen petcocks with "On" "Off" and sometimes "Res".  What does "Pri" stand for?  I thought at first it may be a prime for a fuel pump but that year FJ does not have a fuel pump so ?.  Also when the petcock is on the "On" position the fuel does not flow freely but in the "Pri" position the fuel does flow freely.

My second question is I have read numerous posts on this forum about taking out the air filter box and going with pods.  What do you guys use to cut out the air box (what has worked best for you) and lastly can someone post a picture of their completed pod mod so I can see it.  I know someone posted a pic on here before but I can not find it.

Thanks for all the help

Ok I already answered the first question on my own it is a prime for when the carbs bowls are dry and it uses a vacuum for when the petcock is on the "ON" position.  I have a few more questions.

My 1100 is a California model meaning it has those stupid cans up front and stricter emissions.  I do not live in Cali (I reside in AZ)  I was wondering if once my states emissions guys see that it is a Cali VIN number will they look for the cans and will they run stricter emissions on it because it is a Cali model.

If any of these things are discussed in other posts can you please post some links to the posts.

Thanks again and sorry if these questions are reposts.

Can't help you with the fuel tap question...... If its not run for 4 years.....its probably all gunged up (carbs are probably in need of a good clean too!)
If you are going for pod filters......just unbolt the whole air box and toss it.

is a pic of the UNI dual pods.

 :hi:

I run an '84 in Az.   Are you in Maricopa county or out?   If out, then you are all clear.   I don't believe they'll look for your canisters even if in Maricopa.  They only look at the VIN to verify it matches the title.  They'll just have you idle and sample the exhausts.  If you fail idle, they'll ask you to hold it at 3k rpm and test again.    Every other year, I fail that test.   :D      I do a full carb clean and fresh plugs, all is well when I go back for a retest.

You'll want to pull your carbs and clean them up at the most elemental level possible.   If you can get a 'carb kit' from Dr Raforth (OldSlowGuy) you will have made the best investment in your FJ future.   (thread search for details on that)  Look for the cleaning/tuning document also.

Let me know if you need more info, it seems you have figured out the petcock.  I run the stock airbox with a UNI foam element.

Bikes have been subject to SMOG checks as far back as 86 when I first bought the newly offered (White with Red stripes) Honda CBR (Hurricane) 600. Nothing like sitting in AZ sun waiting in line till they can stick that probe up your tail pipe. Give me some more of that.....NOT!!!!! :negative:

Yep I was was just looking at the DMV requirements for motorcycles in Arizona and yes live in Maricopa County (N. Phx) so emissions is a must and sucky  :negative:.  Thanks for info FeralJuggernaut I will definitely look into the items that Dr Raforth has to offer.  I too have the stock airbox in mine but it has a aftermarket K&N filter in it and now that I get to thinking about it I probably will not mod the airbox for fear that I may have to re-jet the FJ if I do.  Thanks again
