Hi guys, was just wandering the back pages here, and came across a posting on polishing headers.
(Movenon had just done his.) So...
Mine MIGHT be stainless?!?! That would be great! (I've been secretly jealous of some of the photos posted, wondering "where'd they get those?")  :shok:

Mine is a '92; it was mentioned it was only some (uncertain) years. Anyone know the applicable years?
If not, to those of you who've done it: will this grade stainless hold a magnet? Most won't, some grades do. It's my quick check vs. plain steel. I'd run out to the shed, but I'm away on a road trip at the moment.
Many thanks.  :hi:
(Normally I stick to mechanical stuff, but, but.... )

I am not sure but the part number is the same for all 86 to 93. Mine (1990) are stainless and a magnet sticks to it ??

The stock 92 header tubes are definitely stainless. I polished mine and feel it was worth doing

Thanks George; thanks Scott!! Just another nugget I didn't know. :hi:
Cosmetics is usually a bit down the list for me, but seeing what you guys have done... Ooh, this is gonna be good! :yahoo: :drinks: :yahoo:

Yes, all single wall FJ header tubes are stainless....those being from 1986-1993 and later in the EU.
The early 84/85 header tubes are double wall and are not stainless.

Once again, great info coming from you guys. What's recommended for 84 and 85 headers...powder coating, wrapping? And is double wall steel something good to hold onto rather than replace.

RD56, some owners have found that the inner pipe will eventually rust through and rattle around in the outer sounding like a bunch of rocks in a tin can. Luckily, they are interchangeable with the later model stainless headers.

Yep, Harvy is correct. My '84's double wall pipes cracked (inside) and I can tell you that they make ONE HELL OF A RACKET when broken.

Fortunately, Yamaha in their wisdom, made all the single wall stainless steel pipes plug and play.
All the Yamaha header tubes interchange with each and every model FJ,  however each tube is cylinder marked and made to fit that particular cylinder, thus not interchangeable with other cylinders.

You guy's did a hell of a job on those pipes, they look great, maybe you could shed some light how you did it, besides polishing,
what did you use "autosol" or ?
Have another project to do over winter now.

Work in progress. Feed the addiction............ Never be as shiny as Leon and Pats.......

This was the muffler after the layover. It was worse than what the picture shows.
