After several weeks of fighting this beast  :wacko3:....I finally laid this Whale to rest    :dash1: !!!!!! This is by far the most complicated roof I have ever built....but I think I nailed it!!!! with 1,000,000 nails...  :mocking:

Before

From 1 builder to another well done :good2:
Roof trusses have certainly allowed architects, designers, draftsmen etc. to go all out now days. Try pitching that one by hand :wacko3:
Wait to you come down under and see our  timber framing. We don't have to allow for snow loads. So lower pitches and 70x35 Pine framing @ 450 centres external and 600 internal.
Looks like tooth picks compared to that frame.

Hey ...thx for the pat on the back Darran.....as for conventionally cutting this roof......I think the jury is still out on that one......lol......so many problems with these trusses that needed resolving (6 major and 10 minor)....every truss had to be positioned just right for all the roof planes to work.....and with so many corners and girder trusses (and7 different pitches)  .......zero margin for error..... I almost would have preferred cutting the roof..... :mail1:....no surprises....(30% of the roof was filled in conventionally) ..... I am really looking forward to getting together and talking shop.....I am so excited about heading over there...  :yahoo:  ....c u soon  :good:

Mate, you are a gifted Artisan. I`m not a carpenter but do have a bit of a clue on construction. I spent 7 years as the elected treasurer of the Sunshine coast HIA (Housing Industry Assoc) Committee and also 5 years as the KBA (Kitchen & Bathroom Assoc)  Chairman that took me to many Exec meetings all about bullshit politics, but also the occasional dispute on Engineering requirements, Construction regulations and techniques...I`ve sent a copy of your achievement off to my Brother-in-law. He too is a gifted Craftsman with appreciative eye for brilliance...so he too can have an "aha...nice" moment like I just did...
Mate I needed a beer just looking at it...So I can just imajine how good that beer`d be after making it happen!  :drinks:

Mate....you're getting me a bit misty eyed there......(easy on the praise  )....I apologize if I appear to be showing off..it is not my intention... I know sometimes life can be a real uphill battle....and sometimes if we fight and hang on to the bitter end.....we can win..... it is always a great moment for me to stand on the back of my foe in absolute amazement .....and shout !!!

Now I know where I can find a source to build my FJ sanctuary when I win big and have $$$ to spend on my favorite hobby...

Awesome work Kev, it makes my 3,200sqft  A-frame look like a kennel!

Thx for the compliment Conor , The problem with these monster homes is that they can eat the clock very quickly and if your hourly guys aren't producing....can become a bit of a double edged sword......3200 square feet is the best size for me to make the best money. Maybe one day when I am able to do so, I would very much love to visit Scotland England and Ireland......my roots go way back to Glasgow ....4 generations......one day......love to have a pint with you lad  :drinks:

And Monkey man.....whenever your ready......one thing though.... I have never built a tree house  b4 ....would be cool as hell.......could rig up a large hip waiter service to get your hobby wheels up and down......I do think though you should be looking at some of your own California Redwoods.....them beasts have some girth....... :good2:

Ha ha Kev. I followed the photos without first checking who started the post. I was thinking "Geez, somewhere in the U.S. they have the same starter castles I see along Major Mackenzie Drive." (Southern Ontario for the other readers)

I took a custom log building course waaayyyyy back; held at King Campus. Everything by hand, in the field. No two logs the same. Discussions on roof structure and loading seemed to take on a religion of its own that some guys lived for and others just had their eyes glaze over and walked away. Like music, the subject fascinates me but I can't actually perform any of it myself. So, great work there.

those are awesome pics Kev, building a house like that is a work art from my point of view...oh course I'm biased in that I sell building materials for a living (I'm a manf rep) and once swung a hammer to put food on my table. But you should be very proud of those homes and I'd personally love to see more as I really enjoy watching a project grow from a wish to a finished deal...congrats to you, well done!!!

hey...BSI and sir Charles....thank you very much for your kind and generous compliments........I started framing when I was 22 and caught on pretty easily (naturally). It was something I took to rather seamlessly. After a year and a bit of banging the 80's boxes up........I went on my own. That was 1986 and I was 4 months shy of my 23rd birthday.....and I have been banging them up ever since. I love being outside.......could never be a suit and tie guy....no offence to anyone who is...it's just not me........
