Hello folks I'm a new by from oz , and the proud owner of  a  92 fj1200 with abs ,she runs great except for a tiny rattle similar to good old fashioned pinking ,or pinging  at below 70 kms .on the left hand side of the engine ,any comments would be appreciated. :flag_of_truce:

Welcome to the family!

Everyone here has their favorite year/color FJ and it's usually whichever one they own.  Since I too, have a '92 ABS, I think YOU have the best one out there!   :good2:

You can do some searching here about the left side ticking noise.  It's well documented from many users.  I *think* the conclusion is it's the timing chain slapping around a little, but I *know* no one thinks it's a problem to be worried about.  Most cure the noise by wearing ear plugs or riding over 70MPH.

If you do a full valve check/adjust and the noise is sill there...don't worry about it.

:hi: Welcome Gizmo. Is the same noise at start up? Do you hear it only under load? Only in top gear? No exhaust leaks? What part of the land downunder are you in?
Nice model yours.  :drinks:

Welcome Gismo, make sure your idle is set around 1100, that keeps some of the noises down. A loose valve will tap, these air cooled lumps are noisier than the modern water cooled engines. Enjoy the digital campfire we have here and get yourself to a rally for a real FJ campfire. Cheers.

Welcome Gizmo ! The 92's are a good year. Wish I had your color's. I have a 1990 (talk about an anti theft color combo) .
Where are you located in OZ ? How long have you had the FJ and how many Km on the clock ? There are a lot of members here that live in OZ and they are very active with rallies  rides and events.  :good2: :good2:

On the noise it is hard to tell from reading a post, the FJ's have some inherent noises that are normal. Listen to "The General", he has a lot of experience with the FJ's.  :drinks:

welcome, south aussie here.

If you really think it's pinging - check your plugs, they'll tell you if there some weirdness going on in there. Closest thing we have to being able to see inside the cylinder.
http://www.wallaceracing.com/plug-reading-lm.html has a good write up on what tell tale signs there are.
Just need to read this with the thought that it's not aimed at road users where the engine gets every load and throttle position in a ride, but it's a great explanation.

G'day Gizmo, Where in oz are you, if your in the Brisbane area you should've come to the last manshed day where you could've compared your rattle with the 7 or so other FJs there.

These motors are pretty much bulletproof, and as long as there's no loud bangs or clangs I wouldn't worry too much about it.
