Good Day - GTA, Ontario

I normally print off the below and make notes on it when checking out a bike, then I can compare everything and it also helps me remember when I go to make a deal.

Bike Check

Make
Model
Engine size
Year
Colour
Asking Price


Handlebars. Are they bent? If ends are scratched it indicates the bike has been dropped.

Head Bearings. Look for knocking sound when wheeled forward and front bake is applied hard. Check side to side movement.

Fork Seals. Do they leak? If so it won't pass safety until they are fixed.

Brakes. Check for worn pads and sticking.

Frame. Check for welds or is it bent. (Especially around the tail section) This indicates it has been flipped.

Sprockets and Chain. Check for worn teeth.

Rear Brakes. Check for worn pads and sticking.


Tires. Check for cracks and worn tread.

Engine. Run it and check it over. Also look for scratches on the engine guards. (This indicates it has been dropped)
NOTE** Indent scratches indicates a drop. (garage or drive way)
Horizontal scratches indicate it has been slid along the ground in a crash.

Bodywork. Check for cracks in the plastic or breaks. Cracks will eventually flow further and expensive to repair and paint.

Electrical. Make sure all lights, turn sigs, brake lights from front and rear lever and horn work as well as kill switch and side stand shut off.

Not sure if this is current. ?  It looks good.  5 hrs from you is a long way, but doable.  I went 3 hours for mine.

I wouldn't mind driving 5 hrs to go get it,this one looks really clean.
Only trouble is customs paper work and safety requirements for Canada, so id be inclined to get one from within Canada/Ontario

Not sure if I should be asking this here but is it true that FJ's tend to overheat in stop and go traffic during a warm 30' C + day. And would an addition of a fan help, pusher or puller (exhaust). Answer from experienced members will help me avoid doing a heat transfer equation.

On my 86' I have been in 40C in stop & go traffic with no engine heat issues. Other than the fact that I was suited up like picture to the Left. I was the one boiling his Monkey's bum off. One small fact that might be different in your case, here in Kalifornia we can split lanes and filter to the front at stop lights. So once the light is green I am the first to start moving, not waiting for the cars in front. If your worried about the heat consider the RPM oil cooler, great reports from the ones in the field.

950,000 km???  :scratch_one-s_head: That would be an average of over 35,000 km per year for the past 28 years which is even more impressive considering our riding season.  You sure you don't mean 95,000 km? My '92 turned over from 99,999 to 00,000 earier this year and is now at 18,000 km. The 16,300 km to Alaska and back may have had something to do with that.

 I have purchased two bikes in the U.S. All you need is a registration from the state you have purchased it from and a bill of sale. At the border you pay duty, which is only the federal portion of the  tax. That is it. The only issue is it must be over 15 years old, which all FJ's are. Then have it safetied, bring everything to the licence bureau. Register it , pay the provincial tax , buy a plate and away you go. Very simple. A ROI is not needed for any vehicle over 15 years old. All Yamaha's are compliant to our transport Canada regs also so no worries on upgrades etc. The Gov't has a website telling you which models from which manufacturers are non compliant.

Its easy enough then for bikes, because Ive been scared by a few people  for bringing cars and trailers into Canada

Rightfully said. I have my eyes peeled for an FJ, even starting to get a bit restless but since I want a 88+, my options in the Gta seem limited. Going to be viewing a few distant ones next weekend. Its making my job even harder as most people currently dont have the insured. 
I'm enjoying the special newbie treatment and have since developed a great deal of respect for all my brothers here. Let me however say. Ill get old here faster than a childs toy. I hope to achieve this by giving back what I learn to the forum. After all knowledge is no good, if not spread.
I hope to get a bike lets say in the next 2 weeks. Amen
