Annoying Oil Leak

Hi:

While returning home on the interstates this past holiday weekend, I stopped for gas. When I got off the bike, I notice that my right boot top and the shin on my 'Stich was spattered with oil. It appears that the oil was leaking from around the rubber seal of the polished center of the clutch cover. This area has been damp already when ridden before, but this is the first time that I have ridden the FJ for a lot of miles at sustained high speeds, and also found so much oil. Its more of an annoyance than anything, because the oil level in the sight glass showed nearly full, and I had topped it off before the trip that took me a total 1,100 miles.

When I look at the exploded view of the clutch cover, it shows "GROMMET" and 'RING, RUBBER" as two components (Items 19 and 18 respectively) of the assembly. I'm guessing that one of them has aged and is deteriorating. Both pieces, if they can be sourced are pretty pricey, if not obsolete. But before I tear into this area to find what's going on, I thought that I'd post this subject to see if anyone else has had this issue and what they did to correct it. I'm thinking that I might be able to get away with dis-assembling the cover, cleaning things up nicely, and using a black RTV silicone to fix it.

Thanks in advance.

Marty

You need the Clutch Cover Center Section Rubber Gasket Ring.

I have these in stock and sell the quite regularly, I have never replaced the other gasket in the breakdown.

I had a similar problem with oil weeping past the rubber ring # 18.  I ordered one from Randy and the problem stopped.

Yep, check with Randy at RPM http://www.rpmracingca.com/products.asp?cat=39.  Both gaskets are still available at http://www.2wheelpros.com/oem-parts/1985-yamaha-fj1100n-crankcase-cover-assembly.html. I would think all you need is the outside gasket ? Someone else with more experience can chime in on that.

Oops , didn't see Randys post between yours and Fred's....

Thanks. I will be ordering one in the not too distant future. I will also be ordering a new gasket for the cover, since you carry that as well.

Hey Marty, before you order, take your tank off and look closely at those bolts that hold the cam cover on....any oil seepage around those bolts?
They have rubber grommets that, over the years, tend to dry out, harden and leak.

FYI...Do not try to tighten those bolts to stop any oil leaks, they have a shoulder on them and you will end up stripping out the threads.

Chances are 1 or 2 are leaking....or are about ready to....Might as well add those to your order.

Cheers

Pat:

Thanks for the heads up on the valve cover's potential leak points. The grommets and the cover's gasket were replaced a year or two back. I was under the tank recently and saw no leakage. Luckily.
