I have just repainted my 84 FJ1100 and put all the plastic back on. The battery is fully charged, all the lights come on, the starter is fine, but when i turn the key it does nothing.  No click, nothing.  Is there some kind of safety switch i may have missed hooking up.  Any ideas?

If the side stand is down and bike not in neutral the starter should not spin. There is a safety switch that can save your bike from a drop. The clutch lever also has a safety switch...
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

When you turn the key, it turns the lights on.
You have to push the starter button to start it.

Check the wires and connections for the right side especially..............and make sure you don't have the kill button on.  Then get your Meter out.

When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

I don't think Hooligan was trying to be smart but was covering all bases because of your comment "...but when i turn the key it does nothing".

Read what you originally wrote.

"but when i turn the key it does nothing"

If you would take the time to provide an accurate description of the problem, maybe I could have given you a better answer.  As it was, I was just responding to what you wrote.

A question like "My bike won't start. Help."
Will get you an answer like "Check shit."

Does it crank over?  Are you getting spark?  Are you getting fuel?  What have you already tried?  Have you even tried anything?

My 84 has an intermittant non start issue, ,originally thought it was the start/indicator relay box under the left side of the fairing, but worked it out to be in the wires themselves,, although with the key on , I have power and all gauge lights ,just nothing when button is pressed except oil light coming on , , and more recently ( last 5 yrs ) the modified by po ( fuckeddd wiring ) at the main power fuse was causing issues with no power at the key  :dash2:,,, still to find where they tapped into the brake lights to make the gauge lights come on when the brakes are applied  :wacko2:,,
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it
