Rookie mistake I'm sure

I went to do some work on my 85fj1100 last night and I can't get the seat off.
I realized that I might have put seat over 2 levers so now I can't get it off.
Any help would be appreciated.

You need to unlock it with the key at the helmet lock.  Turn it one way for the helmet lock; the other way for the seat latch.  Then pull the two leavers down and lift up back of seat.

I had to laugh.... You took me back to when I brought home my '84...I did the same thing, for the life of me... I could not figure how to take the seat off..

Stuck the key in the seat lock, turned it...and click..the helmet lock sprung open....and those fucking seat locking levers would still not budge....grrrrr

I knew the answer was in the owners manual....but you can figure out where the owners manual was...
yep, under the seat....

I had to call the dealer. They had a good laugh and said..."turn the key the other way..." In the background I heard someone say, " dumb ass"

Speaking of owners manuals... It sounds like you need one. Go down to the files section and we have a section for owners manuals. At the top there is a post (by me) where you can download (for free) a owners manual. The '84 and '85 FJ1100 share the same manual so if you don't see a manual for your '85 use the manual for the '84.

There are some really good tips in there that you need to know.

Note: there are levers on BOTH sides of the seat.

I took this up a notch; in my excitement (I was literally jittery I was so excited), I actually broke the lever on one side off, not realizing that there were two.

A member here in New Zealand disassembled his spare seat latch assembly to mail me a spare, and several months later I got around to installing it.

Yup, rookie mistake indeed... we've all been there.

Actually I didn't know how to remove seat when I first got bike but I did figure it out once I looked it up in the Clymer manual that came with the bike.
Here's my dilema.When I put seat on I must have clicked it in about 1 inch forward.I can't find the levers under seat because of this.
I looked prodded and felt but can't find levers.
Me thinks I'm going to have to remove rear fender to get at seat levers.

The levers are below the rear plastic side cover.  Its a couple inches below the seat.

As Derek said, they're under the plastic trim.
This might make it easier to find. Missing the tab at the back of the tank with the front of the seat is not uncommon.

Noel - totally off-topic - but what is up with the horse saddle on the other FJ?  And the mannequin for that matter?  Shiny FJ though!  

Yes, well, that's Boris, my "companion" of 35 years. In my single years I lived by myself and he stood beside my lounge chair dressed in tails with a napkin over his arm holding a drinks tray in one hand and an open cigarette case in the other. I would change his outfit occasionally for parties or occasions or the seasons. it freaked out first, second, third.... tenth time visitors. When married, my wife tolerated him in remote parts of the house until a visit from my mother-in-law. He was standing on a staircase landing against a window with one arm raised. My mother-in-law encounted him on a middle of the night trip to the bathroom and it nearly finished her off (the jokes just flow at this point don't they). He has been banished to the garage ever since, destined to see out his days wearing my old leathers and still spooking the odd visitor. There are many funny stories from his early party days with me but the one I'll never get over is the urge (after a few drinks) young women seemed to have to be photographed with him, striking a provocative pose, rubbing him up and allowing him to put his hands places and holding body parts I could only dream of. A pracitce I never discouraged.

The saddle. My daughters tack room is overflowing and I hate things on the garage floor. Mind you, if I hadn't cut back on the drinking the bike would be covered in cowhide and have horns on the front by now.
