Hello Johno here I have copied and pasted Mickeys clutch basket question which he didn't get an answer that I could find. :dash2:

"Can anyone comment on whether the play in the clutch basket is typical, or something I should be concerned about?  Since I've got it all apart anyways, I'm going to replace the fiber plates, install the full size one in place of the inner half size plate, replace the scored steel and throw in a new spring.  Will be putting in an order to RPM shortly.  Just not sure if I need to address the play in the clutch basket.

Thanks,
mickey"

Thanks Johno

Welcome Johno, not sure which post to reply too. We have moderators that can move posts if you feel you posted in the wrong section.

Father Pat, perhaps you can merge our new friend's first two posts.

John, it may help if you describe exactly where the play is. Giving accurate information will get you alot more replies and all the answers you need. And by the way, welcome to the Forum.  Pete.

Thanks Pete I will try and describe the play.
The Bike is on its side stand clutch cover off, clutch spring all plates and clutch discs removed.
What the Clymer manual describes as the Clutch housing , what I call the clutch basket remains
The clutch Housing has play a few mm which clunks when pulled and pushed , is this normal damping spring play ?

I don't know.

But I can help make the question clearer, I think.

#1 is the basket, and you're saying it can be slid in and out in the way as if you were pulling it away from the motor as if you were trying to remove it.

Johno

That's right I can grab the primary gear or the clutch housing (number 1 on your diagram) and  move it out a small amount it clunks the whole clutch housing primary gear moves together , only a small amount a few mm.
Note the clutch boss has not been touched it remains bolted up lock washer bent over

That play is fine. There has to be some room in there for heat expansion to not pinch the clutch basket and oil pump drive gear together causing a bind.

Pat, you might as well go ahead and merge the two topics and it probably should be in the maintenance section.
