Rear wheel

I decided that maybe my chain was a bit worn and I should put on a new one with fresh sprockets. To this end, I pulled my rear wheel today.

However, what I found was that the rear wheel bearings seem to be loose. Not completely gone, but enough for me to feel the wheel move a tiny bit on the axle. I think this explains the slight instability I had in corners.

So, the plan at this point is to get it back on and wait for the bearing kit from RPM that I ordered 5 minutes ago. Rear wheel is the one I'm not going to replace any time soon, and having decent bearings is a safety thing.

Maint is always good, not always cheap, but good.  :rofl2: You should have 3 bearings in there. The cush hub bearing usually is the one that takes the beating. Good catch.

The kit from Randy should have all 3, plus the outer seals. Good deal for the money. I'm going to replace them all just so that I don't have to go in there twice.

I'm going to hold off on the chain and sprocket set for now. Just tightening the chain made for a better feel, and it's not that far gone. My other bike, the XS, the chain was stretched beyond the adjustment range. I had the screws all the way in and it was still loose. And the sprockets don't look very worn - no visible shark fin. Maybe I'll replace it all after I get the bearings done.

Replaced the bearings.

Good thing I did, too. Notice the utter absence of seals on the bearings. They are supposed to be there, but weren't. Bearing races were rusty, bearings were scratchy. The right side bearing totally had it - the inner race can be visibly moved from center.

By the way, plumbing fittings make excellent bearing and seal drivers. The cush drive bearing takes a 2" drain fitting and the wheel bearing takes an 1 1/2" union.

Using of those plumbing fittings is very good idea.
