Exhaust Bolt AND Fork Seals - Twofer Questions

So bike is running great, and if it wasn't for a lack of work, I would have much more exciting adventures to share.

Lately I have been getting my girlfriend into riding, and she loves it.

While taking her to the parking lots, I also practiced skills on my new bike as it was completely different then my old bike (The bike she is now riding).

Two things happened, wheelies  :yahoo:, and parts breaking  :dash1:

I had a sudden noise come out from my bike after one particular session of practice where I not only picked the front up, but held it much to my surprise. Hadn't ever done that on a street bike and only a few times on dirt so it was a serious giddy moment, until I heard something new. A quick inspection showed that I had snapped a bolt on my exhaust where it connects to the engine. Head is gone, remaining bolt is stuck up inside there waiting for drilling and tapping. Not looking forward to it and plan on spraying atleast a can of penetrating fluid up there before I even start and hope it wants to come out.

So my first question, what would that part be called, and where will it be found on sites like DGY, Boats.net, and anywhere else that breaks down the bike into sections of parts. It's not shown on the exhaust schematic, or any of the other ones as far as I can tell. Any help???

Few days later I went for a ride to the coast with the ole lady, and got a little excited on one of my favorite roads. As I am flying up to a turn that I know quite well, and know where to start breaking, I grab the brakes only to have not nearly what I was expecting out of my front. A severe pucker factor and the realization that my bike can do more then I knew, and I calmed down my riding for the rest of the day.

I looked at it originally and noticed some oil around where the brake line splits off as it does have an R1 duel front brake modification from the previous owner. I took it to a buddy who runs a shop and showed him saying "this is what I see and I think I have to replace the lines" and he responds with "Nope, your fork seals have blown and that's fork oil spraying out." so the loss of brake is more likely from the fork oil getting on the pads I figure, though I am going out to bleed my brakes just to see if that helps, not sure why but I want to show the girlfriend how to do it anyways so it will be fun.

Question Two: Anyone here done fork seals? I don't know why but that job scares me much more then anything engine related, even drilling and tapping the exhaust bolt that is broken off.

Order one of these from Randy @RPM and use this for your fork seals. It may solve your problem. http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=SealMate

Here is a link for the exhaust stud. It is #11. http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/1989/FJ1200W/CYLINDER+HEAD/parts.html. Randy @ RPM may have these also.

I have everything you need and more...

Header Stud

Fork Seals

I also have the exhaust gaskets, header nuts, and depending on the wear of the forks, rebuild kits with bushings.

That then opens up the forks to improvement by adding these; RPM Fork Valve

The bolt, stud? Doesn't look like it has a head on it, are you sure?

That fork fixer thing is brilliant though and I will be ordering one this coming payday. Just bled my brakes, did not fix the issue so I have to order new pads as well, well, pads for an R1 brake system which I have to figure out what year so I get the right ones. One of the problems with buying a modded bike that you didn't mod, figuring out the correct mods

I think I should take a pic so we're talking about the same thing....  :shok:

Yes the exhaust studs have no head. The exhaust nut is #22 in the diagram. http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/1989/FJ1200W/EXHAUST/parts.html. I have a few spare exhaust nuts. I can send you them if you would like.

That would be awesome!  :good2:

Need to get the old stud out too, but now that I know it's a stud and not a bolt, I have faith it might come out easier then I expected. Need a day off so I can do so, maybe tomorrow if it's not 100+ degrees

http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=1911.0  Open the attached word doc on the first post.  This will walk you though a fork seal change. Change the bushings while you're at it. You won't be drilling out the damper rod or cutting the D shaped Damper adjuster rod as shown in the write up.
