R1 parts for conversions

Hi All,

I would like to hear opinions and options for the use of R1 parts on my 93 FJ1200.  I have a friend that races dwarf cars and I have access to some left over bits from wrecked bikes he has.  I have been considering a number of mods to my bike including front and rear wheel swaps (gsxr has been the most attractive to me so far) shocks front and rear (like many looking forward to Randy's recovery and the unleashing of the new rear shock) potentially swing arm and brakes.  I found one thread on a R1 wheel swap in the UK that looked difficult and I believe I have read a number of references to using the front brake callipers.

Standard style bolt pattern, ie non radial calipers r1 xjr ect will bolt up no problem, but for best effect use the matching 14mm master cylinder
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

Hey Andrew.  As Rod said, non radial front calipers are a direct fit. The rest of the suspension takes much more work.  Depends on how much time and or money you got.

Hey Derek, Yes I did!!  Went for a ride with friends on Sunday to Kelsey Bay after lunch at Roberts Lake.  Now that I don't feel obligated to watch hockey I will post some pics of the before and after.  Still have some parts to pick up from the states down in Victoria to finish some more of the cosmetics and a dynojet kit for the carbs since the bike is now sporting a set of Yoshimira mufflers.  Need to replace the front tire and now that I am keeping the bike would like to convert front and rear.  Haven't had much luck in locating wheels and bits for a GSXR swap so far.

No doubt Tim's post is an excellent account of what can be done with modern R1 parts.  I've used 1st gen r1 parts on 2 FJs and assisted with another. Nice thing of the 1st gen R1 forks is you can use a ThunderAce rim to match the FJ mechanical speedo drive with the later gen brake rotor pattern and spacing.  Some (relatively) minor machining is required!
