Discussion on shim kit cost.

Fook me, that's a bit bit steep isn't it.

I run the XS1100UK shim pool and all i charge for club funds is £1.50 per shim on an exchange basis.

I also offered the same service for XJR/FJ shims on the UK forum but there wasn't any call for them.

The service this forum is offering is, well, a fookin' joke at that sort of money. A wonderful opportunity my big, hairy a$$.

It's a $25 flat rental fee, for a kit of 95 shims which includes the tools and the $12 cost of shipping to your door.
There is no charge for the shims used unless you decide to keep your old ones.

Illiteracy issues aside, we are not sending the kit your way, so don't fret your big hairy ass.

Deducting the cost of shipping, the profit is $12.... Yea, we are making a killing here...

What you get is a kit where you can do the complete job in 1 hour without having to drive down to the dealer and exchange shims (if they do it) or worse, waiting for the mail, which can take days (if lucky)

My thoughts on the matter:

I'm pleased to be able to (finally!) adjust the valves on my two (2) FJ engines.

Seems much cheaper than buying a shim set, plus there's a more diverse variety of shim sizes than the regular set.

The local shops charge AT LEAST $280.00 for a valve adjustment.

I'm also inviting some other local Central Floridians over for a little bike maintenance get-together.

I didn't feel it was too costly or a problem in any way.

You are entitled to your own opinion, of course. It's a free country, at least for now.

You do realize, and Pat explained the total "profit" from the kit is about $12.00 from each person who rents the kit. The $200.00 is used as a deposit to make sure the kit finds its way back home after each use.

As far as the deposit being "Still too much money for what the whole package costs", I have put the cost below which is what I based the deposit price to be.

$131.51 - Valve shim box, with twenty (20) shims
$54.06 - Valve Adjusting Tool
$6.71 ea - Valve Shim Seventy five (75) required to equal the kit content or $503.00

$695.28 to replace the kit in the form it is currently at now. That cost will also rise as the shim count rises...

I just checked the UK Wemoto site and they are selling shims for $13.86 & $18.87 USD or 8.40 & 11.44 GBP. That is double the cost of the valve shims I sell and it appears they do not offer the valve tool that I can find.

As Pat already explained of the $25.00 that is "profit, half of that is the shipping cost to the renter. So, If I have to replace just two shims with new upon return to maintain the levels required to keep the shim kit is a usable state, the "profit" is all gone, make it three or more shim and it is costing me money.

I am glad you were able to offer a kit for use for such an affordable price, and it is too bad it is not available anymore, but based on the previous experience as posted by Mark Olson...

Back in the yahoo days , there was a group shim kit that was" lost "by some asshole who kept it for himself  . the 200.00 penalty should prevent that.

The need for the deposit is to prevent this from happening again.

Regardless of your feelings on the price of the Shim Kit, you are insulting the integrity of not only two of the key players involved with this Forum, but of the honesty of most of the other members as well.

Both gentlemen, as well as others associated with creating, maintaining and participating in this Forum are above reproach.

I suggest that you actually do shave your self proclaimed "big hairy ass", no doubt you will be able to see a lot more clearly.

The kit is for the members that want to use it. The rules are clear, the choice to use it is clear. If members are not interested then enough has been said. Please don't hinder the members that want it and on equal ground don't sell it beyond what it is.... The shim kit was done before and lost to God knows where. This is an attempt to benefit the current members and keep the Kookaloo flowing for all times...
