hi there.

i have recently bought an fj1200, i have realized that the exhaust is dripping oil when its been running for a couple of mins, also there is some smoke an there is a strong smell (fumes), it putts and pops a bit when going slow (even worse when in gear and slowing down). it seems to be using a hell of a lot of petrol

also i dont know if its related or not but the idol speed is running too slow and cuts out without chalk somtimes.

so im guessing the bike is running to rich but not sure how to fix or where to start, any advice would be great thanks :unknown:

oil is coming from your exhaust? if i read that right
when i got mine the oil drian bolt gasket leaked (cheap esay fix)
does sound like your running rich chack your spark plugs also idle speed is adjusted in the center of the four carbs and they have adjusters on the carbs as well about 2 1/2 turns out from bottom  hope this helps im sure some other guys will chime in
When in doubt throttle out

Sounds like the carbs need to be gone thru, float needle orings replaced, etc...

In addition it sounds like it's time for some valve seals. Adjust your valves, then do a leak down test to see how healthy your rings and valve seats are....perhaps it's just your valve seals leaking oil into the combustion chamber. Sounds like a lot of oil if it's comming out your exhaust.

Are you sure it's oil and not condensation?

Hi,
From the looks of the avatar, the bike has aftermarket exhaust.  Does it have an stock airbox?  These are two things to consider, and if so the carbs may not be jetted correctly.

Goes wthout saying, the choke (enrichener) needs to be turned off after it has warmed up; no insult intended, but some of the "younger folks" have no idea what a choke is.

As has been mentioned, the carbs probably need a look and likely a complete cleaning.  There is a lot of info in the files section of this forum.

Once you are sure they are clean, and you have checked the valve clearance, the carbs will need to be synced.  Even being a small amount out will affect idle.

As Pat mentioned as well, initially you will get get a fair amount of condensation, depending on the weather and how long the bike has been sitting.

Is there any way of working out whether the leak into the exhaust is from the valve stem seals, or from something more serious such as head gasket or piston rings?

Pat Conlon

Sure, do a compression test on a warm engine with the throttles wide open...see what your numbers are.

Compression test, "wet" compression test, and a leakdown test.
