    Do i have to use valve saver in my 86 fj1200

No, but you need to change your muffler bearings every 3000 miles.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

My guess would be some sort of Lead or Lead substitute additive for the fuel.

I would assume the answer here should be "NO" since the FJ engines were designed to run on unleaded fuel..........

      Thanks when i bought the bike the bloke said he was told to use it but i have other bikes that age and have never used it.
       And yes it is what it says.

used to use it... haven't on the fj... i believe that if your seats for your valves are of a certain hardness then you don't need to use it...( correct me if I'm incorrect please) mines an 87 1tx and i use 95 or 98 octane fuel.... never had a problem... valve saver is a lead additive for older bikes so they can run on newer fuel. Nulon. Australian company.

valve saver is a substitute to do the job that lead in petrol used to do.
You need it if your engine has soft valve seats

i understand the lead used to coat the exhaust valves and provide cushioning and the softer type valve seats were less prone to being hammered out of shape.

I couldn't imagine soft valve seats in a 11k+ rpm engine
